Something Isn't Right
For weeks, Zephyr, Solene, and Caspian had been fully consumed by their own survival struggles—too busy failing at jobs, cooking, and financial management to think about anything beyond their immediate misery.
But then, as things slowly started improving, they noticed something strange.
Little details.
Tiny inconsistencies.
Moments that, on their own, seemed random—but together, formed something unsettling.
At first, they ignored it.
They assumed it was just their exhaustion—their brains playing tricks on them.
Until something happened that they couldn't ignore.
The Strange Phone Call
It was late one night, after another barely successful meal, when Zephyr's cheap, outdated phone—the one Jonathan had given them to replace their luxury devices—rang unexpectedly.
The number was blocked.
Instinctively, Zephyr almost ignored it—until Solene grabbed the phone first and answered with her usual dramatic flair.
"Who is this, and why are you calling a Sterling?"
Silence.
Then—a low voice, calm, deliberate.
"You need to be careful. Your father's enemies are watching you."
The three of them froze.
"What?" Solene whispered.
But the caller had already hung up.
And just like that, their world, which had already been turned upside down, suddenly felt even more dangerous.
The First Clue
They tried to dismiss the call, brushing it off as a prank, as some random creep messing with them.
But then, two days later, another odd thing happened.
While working his shift at the grocery store, Zephyr overheard two customers whispering in the next aisle.
At first, it sounded normal enough—small talk, business chatter.
Until one of them said—too casually—
"Sterling's empire won't last much longer."
Zephyr stiffened.
The other person laughed quietly, replying—
"Not if everything goes according to plan."
Then, as if sensing they were being overheard, the conversation immediately stopped, and both men walked away like nothing had happened.
Zephyr stood there, heart racing, suddenly deeply aware that their exile might not just be a lesson in responsibility.
Maybe—just maybe—something bigger was happening.
Something they weren't meant to know.
Survival had been their only concern—until now.
Now, there was a question.
Who was trying to destroy their father's empire?
And—more importantly—why were they being watched?
