Chapter 10: Their First Lead

The Investigation Starts (Poorly)

After discovering the suspicious text message about their father's company, Zephyr, Solene, and Caspian knew they had to start digging deeper.

The problem?

None of them had ever investigated anything before.

Their past experiences with uncovering "secrets" mostly involved:

Zephyr finding out his favorite smoothie brand secretly used regular bananas instead of imported ones. Solene exposing a fashion brand for reusing fabric patterns from five years ago. Caspian attempting to figure out which housekeeper kept secretly throwing away his collection of absurd purchases.

None of which had prepared them for actual detective work.

But that wasn't going to stop them from trying.

Step 1: Finding Someone Who Knows More (Immediate Chaos Ensues)

Since they were banned from high-society events, they had to look for answers somewhere else.

The plan?

Find someone connected to Sterling Enterprises—someone still loyal enough to help them.

The execution?

Immediately a disaster.

Failures That Occurred Immediately:

Zephyr tried to call former business executives—only to discover their numbers had been disconnected (or blocked him entirely). Solene attempted to send out discreet messages on her old social media accounts—only to accidentally go viral for posting something vague that people misinterpreted as a "dramatic comeback announcement." Caspian assumed they could find "secret informants" at a coffee shop, because "people talk about business deals at coffee shops, right?"

After hours of getting nowhere, they finally found something promising—an old personal assistant of their father's, someone who had mysteriously resigned right before their exile.

This was their best lead yet.

Now, they just had to meet him without ruining everything.

Step 2: The Secret Meeting (Which Immediately Becomes Not-So-Secret)

Their father's former assistant, Mark Holt, had agreed to meet them at a quiet café—far away from corporate offices and high-society attention.

The plan was simple:

Arrive discreetly. Ask intelligent questions. Get answers without drawing attention.

The result?

Complete disaster.

Mistakes That Happened Immediately:

Zephyr wore sunglasses indoors, trying to look "low-key and professional." Instead, it made him look like a suspicious undercover agent—drawing even MORE attention. Solene whispered every sentence dramatically, making the conversation sound ten times more suspicious than necessary. Caspian, for absolutely no reason, showed up carrying a fake newspaper, which he pretended to read while muttering "casual business things" under his breath.

Mark stared at them in absolute disbelief, realizing immediately that this would not be a normal conversation.

"You three are terrible at this."

They couldn't argue with that.

Step 3: The Truth Begins to Unravel

Despite their horrific investigation methods, Mark finally revealed what he knew.

"Something was happening at Sterling Enterprises before your exile," he said, voice lowering seriously. "Your father was preparing for a major corporate shift—something big."

Zephyr leaned in, intrigued.

Solene narrowed her eyes dramatically.

Caspian was trying to look serious while secretly eating a muffin.

"But the day before he sent you away, things changed."

Mark hesitated.

"He received an anonymous warning."

"A warning about what?" Zephyr demanded.

Mark shook his head. "That's what I don't know. All I can tell you is—your exile wasn't just about your behavior. It was about something else. Something bigger."

And just like that, their entire understanding of their punishment shifted.

Their father hadn't just exiled them to teach them responsibility.

He had done it to keep them out of something dangerous.

But now?

Now, they had no choice but to figure out exactly what that danger was.

Their exile was part of something bigger.

And whether they liked it or not?

They were right in the middle of it.
