Territorial battle [1]

War is coming.

Am I prepared? I honestly don't know.

But who cares? All that matters is that today, I don't want to die. So, I'll survive, and thrive. And spite all the bastards who want me dead.

The soil shifted beneath me.

Not the usual tremors of passing insects or the occasional rainfall. No, this was something more deliberate. I could feel it; something encroaching, pushing at the edges of my domain.

'Bring it on bastard!' I snarled.

I had no eyes, no sight in the traditional sense, but the ground vibrated with an unmistakable pulse. Something was trying to take root nearby. It was slow at first, barely noticeable, but I felt it; creeping, curling, testing.

A rival.

[Territorial Encroachment Detected- Initiating Dominance Protocol!]

~----~

I hadn't been expecting this.

A plant, a rival had decided that this patch of soil, this patch of sunlight that I laboriously conquered was as much theirs as mine.

I was not kind enough to just let go of what I labored for.

So, a fight was inevitable.

And now, the real fight was beginning.

I braced myself, sinking my roots deeper into the earth, seeking stability. I had to outgrow this thing. I couldn't let it take my space, not when I was just beginning to understand this world, this new existence. No, I would not be driven into the shadows.

A deep, primal instinct surged through me.

The kind of instinct I had when I walked the streets as Clayton Hunt. The kind that told me to dominate, to assert my place before someone else claimed it first.

This wasn't some ordinary plant fight. This was war.

I flexed my roots, sending them outwards in slow, deliberate motions. Each probing movement was calculated, seeking any weakness, any opportunity. But the rival plant responded quickly, a sharp tug beneath the soil as it extended its own roots, eager to establish its hold.

This wasn't a simple struggle for space, it was a battle for supremacy.

I could feel its roots pushing against mine, a silent tug of war that was growing in intensity. It wasn't just taking my space, it was trying to strangle me, choking my growth from the inside.

And me? I had no intention of being strangled.

'You'll have to do more than that to kill me bastard!'

Facing the pressure of life and death, I felt my hate for death rising to a new level, hitting a crescendo. I felt spite bubbling in me like a fountain, forming a deep river of hatred in me.

And with these emotions came power.

[Root Feeder Tendrils Unlocked: Parasitic Roots]

~----~

A surge of energy rippled through me.

It was sudden, powerful, invigorating.

I didn't know where it came from but immediately, I seized the moment, expanding my roots, warping them with a new purpose. I didn't just need to hold my ground, I needed to attack, to sap what this rival had.

I pushed forward with my new Root Feeder Tendrils, coiling them around the rival's roots like a parasite, slowly siphoning off its nutrients.

The rival plant recoiled, its roots pulling back instinctively, filling me with dark glee but I wasn't finished. It had made the mistake of challenging me, and now it was paying for it.

My roots dug deeper, faster, feeding on its life force.

But the rival wasn't powerless. I felt the shift in the soil as it began to fight back, releasing chemicals into the earth, allelopathic toxins.

The ground around me grew cold and bitter as the soil itself rebelled, rejecting my roots. For a moment, having grown used to living in the soil and always feeling it, I felt betrayed by it.

I didn't focus on that though, I didn't have the luxury because the poison already began to spread, cutting off my access to nutrients, slowing my growth, making me sluggish.

I gritted my mind's teeth.

The tension was building, both beneath the soil and within me. It wasn't enough to fight back with raw strength. I had to be smarter, faster, more ruthless.

Skinny, powerless, and useless I was, or so they thought.

Works to my advantage though. The battle is half-way won once the enemies underestimate me. That was my creed as an outskirts bastard.

Clayton Hunt didn't rely on pure force. Rather, he relied on his wits. And I was determined to do the same now.

With an inner growl, I pulled my roots back, forcing them into a new pattern.

I wasn't just reacting anymore; I was evolving.

DING!

[EVOLUTION TRIGGERED: ROOT FEEDER TENDRILS EVOLVED]

[PARASITIC ROOTS ENHANCED]

~----~

The change was instantaneous.

My roots thickened, reinforced with barbed spikes that dug deeper into the rival plant's roots, exploiting every crevice, every weakness.

I fed off the poison it had tried to send my way, turning it into power, converting its assault into energy.

I felt stronger. More in control. And the rival plant felt it too.

Its roots pulled back again as if startled, uncertain now, giving me the opening I needed.

But it wasn't over. Not by a long shot.

A new tremor rumbled through the soil. And this time, it wasn't the rival plant alone. It was calling for reinforcements.

I felt a swarm of tiny, buzzing creatures gather above me, crawling across the soil like a living carpet. Insects, aphids most likely, or something similar.

Their little bodies were a dull greenish-brown, but their intent was clear. They weren't here to observe. They were here to attack.

They swarmed down toward my exposed leaves and tendrils, their tiny pincers ready to tear into me. I felt the first sharp bite as they burrowed into one of my smaller tendrils, piercing it with painful precision.

Snap!

My sap leaked, and the pain was almost unbearable.

'Ah… f*ck, goddamit!'

I had no mouth to scream, but the sensation of loss, of damage; I felt it through every fiber of my being.

[Vulnerable Location Detected- Leaf Damage: 25%]

[WARNING: Aphid Swarm Incoming!]

~----~

Pain, it was unbearable.

I had been careless, overconfident. I had to act before it was too late.

I reeled back, but the aphids didn't stop. I needed a counterattack, and fast. Something to push them away before they consumed me completely.

DING!

~----~

[EVOLUTION TRIGGERED: SPINE BLOOM UNLOCKED!]

~----~

My body twisted and morphed.

Thick, jagged spines began to sprout along my tendrils and leaves, sharp as thorns. Each spine pulsed with venom, toxic sap ready to explode at a touch.

The aphids reached for my vulnerable tendrils again. But this time, they weren't going to feast easily.

As they crawled toward me, I launched a barrage of spines, sending them careening through the swarm. I could feel their bodies punctured, crushed, their tiny forms bursting as they were impaled on my thorns.

The surviving aphids screamed in pain, scattering in all directions.

But there was no time to rest. The rival plant wasn't backing down. It seemed to realize that I was becoming a threat; its roots lurched forward with new aggression and I reeled.

'You goddamn, insufferable bastard!'

I braced for the next wave, but this time, the plant didn't just send its roots; it was sending something more dangerous.

A single, thick root shot toward my core.

I could feel it, a slow, deliberate movement. Its intent was clear; it was aiming for my heart, my very life force.

DING!

[Core Threatened! Emergency Evolution Available]

~----~

My mind screamed at me to act. Now. I didn't have the time or luxury to think, only to survive.

And so I did.

DING!
