Chapter 22: Duty

Kaelan stood in the middle of a patch of dirt, arms crossed, staring at the two corn seeds like they were sacred relics.

"So... this is our future," he muttered. "Two little kernels of hope."

Behind him, Brunna stretched her arms and cracked her neck. "I can dig. Or punch the dirt. Up to you."

Kaelan sighed. "Just dig. Gently. This isn't a battlefield."

Noka waddled over with a basket of mushrooms on his back. He wore a wide-brimmed mushroom hat now. No one knew where he got it.

"The soil is dry," Noka said, poking it with a stick. "You gotta whisper to it. Talk sweet. Soil listens."

Kaelan blinked. "You talk to dirt?"

"And mushrooms. They whisper back."

Brunna leaned in and muttered, "I think he licked a weird mushroom."

Kaelan rolled his eyes and got to work. With Earth Magic, he gently loosened the soil. He made two little rows, then carefully planted the corn seeds. Brunna dumped a bucket of water on them, splashing mud all over his face.

"Oops."

Hint: Hungry villagers are cranky. Cranky villagers throw rocks.

"Well," Kaelan muttered, wiping his face, "at least it's progress."

Nearby, Noka built a small wooden fence. It was crooked, missing a few planks, and had a weird smell.

"What's that stink?"

"I used mushroom glue. Very sticky. Very... alive."

Before Kaelan could question it, the squirrel hopped up on the fence and stared at the corn plot like it was its inheritance.

"Don't even think about it," Kaelan warned.

The squirrel stared him down, then turned and pooped on the fence.

Brunna drew her stick-spear. "Want me to chase it?"

"No," Kaelan said. "It'll just come back stronger."

Later, Kaelan called the villagers together.

"Alright. Roles. We need actual jobs now."

Brunna raised her hand. "Guard Captain. Obviously."

"Fine. You're terrifying, so that works."

"Thanks!"

Noka shuffled forward. "I claim Head of Farming. The mushrooms demanded it."

Kaelan shrugged. "Sure. As long as you don't poison us."

Lio, their merchant, walked over and squinted at the plot. "Is that it? Two corn?"

"Quality over quantity," Kaelan said proudly.

Lio nodded, unimpressed. "Right. You'll feed all of us with two corn. I'll go scavenge. Again."

Dinner that night was mushroom soup. Again. It tasted like wet socks and regret.

System Notification:

> Meal Cooked (1/10)!

> Progress toward Side Quest: 'Feed Your People.'

"One down," Kaelan said, sipping the soup. "Only nine more to go."

Brunna gagged. "We need a chicken. Or salt. Or flavor."

Noka raised a finger. "I can make mushroom jerky."

"That sounds illegal," Kaelan said.

Everyone went to sleep early, stomachs mostly full. Kaelan stared at the ceiling of his small house, wondering how he ended up as a farmer with one magical corn patch and a hostile squirrel.

At dawn, Lio burst into the village square.

"We have a problem!"

Kaelan stumbled outside, still half-asleep. "Did the squirrel declare war again?"

Lio shook his head. "Worse. A chicken joined the village."

From the treeline, a lone chicken strutted out with confidence and attitude. It looked around like it owned the place.

Kaelan squinted. "...I'm going back to bed."

Brunna grinned. "Name it Dinner."

"No. We need eggs."

Noka raised both hands. "I shall build a chicken temple."

"No temples!"

System Notification:

Kaelan rubbed his face. "...Okay. Let's grow this stupid village."

The chicken pecked his boot.

"I already regret everything."
