The sun climbed slowly over the still village in the morning. Kaelan stood before the furnace, observing the pale smoke rising. The furnace was running fine. Not ideal, but it would do for the time being.
He rechecked the quest:
Quest: Enlarge the Village
Objective: 10 villagers
Bonus: +1 tool blueprint if all villagers have jobs
Currently, the village contained 7 individuals. Garka, Zira, Brunna, Lio, Noka, and the squirrel (who still didn't count as a full villager). Kaelan estimated he needed three more. Easy to say, not easy to do.
"We should send someone out," Garka said, stretching next to him. "There could be more people in the forest or by the river."
Kaelan nodded. "I'll go. You hold down the fort. If I'm not home by dark, I was eaten by a bear."
Garka grinned. "Or something worse. A bored raccoon."
Kaelan took up his walking staff and a pouch of dried berries and headed off along the dusty trail that went into the trees. The road had become more familiar, but threat still lay just beyond the woods.
The woods were silent. Too silent. Kaelan whistled a tune to fill the silence. He was halfway to the river when he heard the sound—a low growl.
He froze. The bushes in front of him rustled. Then, a massive boar emerged.
".You're not a villager," Kaelan grumbled.
The boar dug its hooves into the ground. Kaelan inched back, holding his stick.
Then, unexpectedly, something strange occurred. A rock came out of nowhere and struck the side of the boar. It squealed and took off.
Kaelan turned to find a girl with tattered clothes standing behind a tree. Her dark hair was unkempt, and she clutched another rock, just in case.
"You're welcome," she said, her eyes narrowing.
Kaelan blinked. "Thanks. I'm Kaelan. Do you live out here?"
She paused, then nodded. "Name's Wren. Lived in a little camp, but it's not there anymore."
"Want to go with a village that doesn't throw rocks at strangers?"
Wren raised an eyebrow. "Do you have food?"
"Bread, berries, and one very judgmental squirrel."
She smirked. "Alright. Take me there."
They returned together. Kaelan shared berries with her, and Wren spoke a bit more. She knew how to trap, track, and skin small animals. A survivor.
By the time they arrived at the village, Garka was standing at the gate, arms folded.
"Who's this?"
"Wren. She threw a rock at a boar for me. That's saving my life."
Garka sized Wren up and down. "You fight better than he does?"
"Probably."
"Good. We need someone like you."
System Notification:
New Villager: Wren (Hunter)
Population: 8/10
Kaelan smiled. They were getting closer.
Later that night, Kaelan took Wren on a tour. She inspected the fields, the houses, and the furnace.
"You built all this?"
"Sort of. With help. Mostly with help."
"Not bad."
As the sun set low, a gentle breeze blew through the trees. Kaelan was exhausted but optimistic. They were growing—slowly, strangely, but surely.
Quest Updated:
Goal: Reach 10 villagers
Progress: 8/10
Optional: Build a watchtower to unlock map visibility.
Kaelan rubbed his chin. "A watchtower, huh? That could be useful."
He looked over at Wren, who was already arguing with the squirrel.
Yeah. They'd manage.
