Chapter 13: Close Quarters

The Weekend Getaway

Lina had the idea.

"A study weekend," she told them all. "Library's too stuffy. My cousin's cabin is free. We go Friday. Back Sunday. Group focus. No drama."

She didn't mention it was also a subtle test—Calvin and Daisy, together in close quarters. Marcus and herself, forced to share air for more than a few passing comments.

When they arrived, the cabin was small and rustic, with uneven floorboards, old couches, and a view of the lake that made everything feel softer.

---

Day One

Calvin and Marcus handled groceries while Daisy and Lina unpacked upstairs.

"You sure this isn't weird for you?" Lina asked.

"Being here?" Daisy shrugged. "Honestly... it's kind of nice. I'm not used to people caring where I go."

Lina smiled, her tone teasing. "Except for your academic soulmate."

Daisy didn't reply, but her blush was answer enough.

Downstairs, Marcus nudged Calvin. "If you sleep in the same room, don't snore."

Calvin rolled his eyes. "We're not like that."

"But you want to be."

"Not unless she wants it too."

Marcus studied his brother. "You've changed."

"Or I'm finally letting myself feel."

---

Evening — Fireside

Later, they all sat near the fireplace with mugs of cocoa and the sound of soft rain against the windows.

"I don't believe in perfect love," Daisy said suddenly.

Everyone looked at her.

"I think love is messy. Uncomfortable. Maybe even inconvenient. But... if it's real, it should still feel like freedom."

Calvin's gaze didn't leave hers. "Then I want messy."

And just like that, something cracked open between them again—this time not private, but shared.

---

Meanwhile — Marcus & Lina

Outside on the porch, Marcus and Lina stood in silence, watching the rain.

"You don't talk much," Lina said.

"I only speak when I mean it."

"So what do you mean right now?"

He turned toward her. "You're sharp. Loud. Brilliant. And exhausting in the best way."

She smirked. "That's your way of flirting?"

"No," he said quietly. "That's my way of noticing."

She looked away, caught off guard by the sincerity.

Maybe they were all learning that love doesn't always shout. Sometimes, it just shows up.
