Chapter 42: Old Shoes and New Truths

Daisy

Ezra's room still smelled like old sneakers, incense, and something faintly citrusy. A mess of books and half-sketched artwork littered his desk. She sat cross-legged on his bed, picking at the frayed edge of a pillow.

"I saw her," Daisy said.

Ezra didn't look up from his sketchbook. "Your boyfriend's mom?"

"She's not my boyfriend's mom. Calvin isn't—" She stopped.

Ezra smirked.

She threw a sock at him.

"Fine. Your project partner's mom," he said. "What did she do?"

"She watched."

Ezra nodded. "Scary."

"It wasn't that," Daisy said. "It was that she didn't do anything. Not a smile, not a frown. Just... nothing."

Ezra closed his sketchbook. "So you wanted her to react?"

Daisy hesitated. "Maybe."

"Because that would've made you feel seen. Even if it was judgment?"

She swallowed. "Yeah."

He leaned back, arms crossed behind his head. "You want my opinion?"

"Always."

"She doesn't scare me, Dee. But you do."

That made her laugh. "Why?"

"Because you're braver than you think. But you keep waiting for someone else to tell you it's okay to feel things."

She looked down at her hands. "What if I mess it up?"

Ezra smiled softly. "Then you'll figure it out. That's what people who love you do."

And for the first time in a long time, Daisy let herself believe it.
