What Wakes Beneath

Ashren

He didn't sleep.

How could he?

The name she gave him still echoed through his bones—Ashren. It felt like fire and frost all at once, like a door unlocked in a house he didn't know was his.

He sat alone in the stone garden beyond the chapel ruins, where vines grew from cursed soil and the stars refused to shine.

Magic trembled under his skin.

He didn't understand it. Only that it hurt when he didn't release it.

So he closed his eyes.

And the earth beneath him began to bleed.

---

Selene

She stood at the threshold, watching him from the shadows.

"My son," she whispered, still tasting the words with awe and guilt.

Ashren didn't turn. "Something's moving underground."

Selene's voice chilled. "What kind of something?"

He looked back at her.

"The kind that knows me."

---

Kael

Kael stood beside the Hollow Throne's cracked foundations. His scouts had returned in pieces—those who returned at all.

"What did this?" he asked the surviving blood-mage.

Her eyes were hollow. "Not what. Who."

He stepped closer. "Speak."

She swallowed. "Something sealed below the throne. Buried in the Queen's first war."

Kael frowned. "A prisoner?"

"No," she whispered. "A god."

The Queen

In her deepest sanctuary, the Queen knelt before a pool of black ichor. The surface showed no reflection—only memory. Only sacrifice.

She bled into the water.

And it opened.

From beneath, a voice older than time whispered in a language even she feared.

"I have obeyed your silence," the voice said. "Now what price will you pay to be heard?"

The Queen didn't hesitate.

"My name. My soul. My crown."

"And the child?"

She smiled, sharp and cruel.

"Let him live. Let him watch her fall."

Ashren

That night, Ashren dreamed of wings made of smoke and eyes like suns. He heard a name spoken in a language he somehow knew—and when he woke, the mark on his wrist burned like flame.

Selene was beside him instantly.

"What happened?"

He stared down at the sigil.

A perfect, ancient rune now glowed on his skin.

He looked up, breathless.

"It's calling to me."

Selene gripped his hands. "Whatever it is, we'll stop it."

Ashren's voice was barely a whisper.

"No. I think it's inside me already."

Final Scene – Liora's Warning

Liora poured over old scriptures found in the Queen's shattered vault.

As she read, her breath grew thin.

Selene entered. "What is it?"

Liora met her gaze.

"Your son's not just a weapon. He's a vessel. Something ancient is trying to return—through him."

Selene stepped back.

"And if we can't stop it?"

Liora's voice cracked.

"Then the Queen won't have to kill you, Selene."

"Your own son will."
