The official engagement hadn't happened yet, but the families were already treating it like a done deal. The guest list had doubled overnight. Elara had received five mood boards for the décor by noon.

She closed her laptop with a sigh.

Everything was loud.

Except him.

 That Evening – Arden Rooftop Lounge

It was Ava's idea—a "just us" hangout before the storm picked up again. No planners, no photographers, no extended relatives. Just their inner circle. Elara almost skipped it. She didn't like "fun" scheduled into her calendar.

But something pulled her there.

And someone kept her there.

Ethan was already seated when she arrived, his sleeves rolled, hair slightly messy from the breeze, drink untouched. He looked up when she walked in. Just a glance—but it lingered a second too long to be casual.

"Didn't think you'd come," he said.

"I didn't either," she replied, sliding into the seat beside him. Not across. Beside.

No one mentioned it, but Ava smirked.

 A Soft Shift

The night wore on. Stories flew around. Laughter echoed. But Elara and Ethan existed in their own quiet bubble—saying little, but saying enough.

She noticed he passed her the sparkling water without asking.

He noticed she removed the olives from her appetizer the moment they landed—and quietly passed them to his plate.

No grand gestures.

Just… noticing.

Later, when most had left and the lights dimmed, she stood by the glass railing, watching the city.

He joined her, arms resting beside hers.

"I like this," she said softly.

"What? Rooftop views?"

"No. Not having to pretend." She turned to face him. "With you… it's quiet, but not lonely."

He didn't reply right away. Just looked at her like she was a secret he hadn't yet unlocked but wanted to keep.

"I don't say much," he said finally. "But if I do… I mean it."

"I know."

End of the Night

As they stepped into the elevator together, the silence between them wasn't uncomfortable. It was full.

Before the doors closed, she looked up at him, slightly closer than necessary.

"If we weren't arranged," she asked quietly, "would you still have looked at me like that?"

He didn't blink.

"I think I would've tried even harder."

The doors slid shut.

And Elara smiled .
