Chapter 51: The Oracle's Domain
The path to the Oracle's lair was steep and treacherous, winding through dense forests and rocky cliffs. Kazuki's muscles ached with each step, but he kept moving forward, his jaw clenched, his mind focused.
"Are you sure about this?" Elara asked, her brows furrowed with concern. "The Oracle is... unpredictable."
Kazuki nodded, his eyes fixed on the mountain peak ahead. "If she can get rid of the Grizzly, it's worth the risk."
Tara trailed behind them, her expression tense. "Just remember, the Oracle's not exactly known for her charity. She always demands something in return."
Kazuki's grip tightened on the hilt of his sword. "Whatever it takes."
The entrance to the Oracle's lair was a massive cave, its walls adorned with glowing runes that pulsed like a heartbeat. The air was thick with a strange, intoxicating scent that made Kazuki's head spin.
"She's in there," Elara said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Kazuki stepped forward, his boots echoing against the stone floor. The darkness swallowed him, and for a moment, all he could hear was his own breathing.
Then, a voice echoed through the cavern, soft and melodic. "Welcome, Kazuki. I've been expecting you."
A figure stepped forward, emerging from the shadows. The Oracle was a striking woman with silver hair cascading down her back and eyes that glowed like molten gold. She wore a flowing robe adorned with intricate symbols that seemed to shift and writhe as she moved.
"You seek to rid yourself of the beast within," the Oracle said, her gaze piercing. "But are you prepared to pay the price?"
Kazuki swallowed, his heart pounding. "What's the price?"
The Oracle's smile was slow, almost predatory. "That depends. Tell me, Kazuki, what are you willing to sacrifice?"
Kazuki's fists clenched. "Anything."
The Oracle's eyes glimmered. "Anything?" she echoed, stepping closer. "Even... her?"
Kazuki's heart skipped a beat as the Oracle gestured to Elara, who stood behind him, her eyes wide and unblinking.
"What do you mean?" Kazuki demanded, his voice sharp.
"The Grizzly's power is bound to you," the Oracle said, her tone soft but firm. "To sever that bond, you must make a choice. The beast hungers for a life — a soul bound to your heart."
Kazuki's blood ran cold. "No. There has to be another way."
The Oracle's expression hardened. "There is no other way. If you wish to be free of the Grizzly, you must offer a life in exchange."
Kazuki's mind spun, his pulse thundering in his ears. Elara stepped forward, her hand reaching for his.
"Kazuki," she whispered, her eyes glistening. "If it's the only way —"
"No!" Kazuki shouted, his voice echoing through the cavern. "There has to be another way."
The Oracle's gaze remained unwavering. "Then you have a choice to make. Fight the Grizzly forever... or sacrifice the one you love."
Kazuki's chest tightened, the weight of the decision crushing him. The Grizzly's laughter echoed in his mind, dark and triumphant.
"You can't escape me, Kazuki," it purred. "Not without losing her."
Kazuki's jaw clenched, his eyes blazing. "I will find another way."
The Oracle's lips curved into a knowing smile. "Very well. But remember, time is running out. And every time you use the Grizzly's power, you draw closer to becoming its slave."
Kazuki's fists trembled as he turned away, Elara and Tara following close behind. But even as they left the Oracle's lair, the Grizzly's presence lingered, a dark, suffocating shadow that refused to be shaken.
