Chapter 55: A Moment of Respite

Chapter 55: A Moment of Respite

The air was thick with tension as the trio finally made it to the small clearing by the river. The water flowed gently, the sound soothing in the otherwise eerie silence. Kazuki dropped to his knees by the riverbank, splashing cold water onto his face, hoping to wash away the lingering traces of blood.

Elara sat down beside him, her expression soft but worried. "Kazuki... you need to talk to us."

Kazuki clenched his jaw, the Grizzly's voice a constant hum in the back of his mind. "There's nothing to say."

"There's plenty to say," Tara interjected, crossing her arms as she leaned against a tree. "Like how you almost lost control back there. You could have killed us."

Kazuki's fists tightened, his knuckles white. "I didn't, though."

"But what if you had?" Tara's voice was sharp, her eyes blazing. "We can't keep pretending like this isn't a problem."

"I know that!" Kazuki snapped, water dripping from his hair as he looked up at her. "Do you think I wanted this? Do you think I wanted to become... this?"

Tara's jaw tightened, her eyes narrowing. "Then do something about it."

"Enough," Elara said, her voice firm as she stood up. "Tara, go cool off."

Tara scowled but said nothing, turning away and stalking deeper into the woods. Elara waited until she was out of earshot before kneeling beside Kazuki.

"You're not alone in this," Elara said, her fingers brushing his cheek. "We're here for you."

Kazuki swallowed, the tightness in his chest loosening just a little. "It's not that simple. The Grizzly... it's getting stronger."

"Then we'll find a way to control it," Elara said, her eyes unwavering. "We'll go back to the Oracle. Maybe she knows something."

Kazuki shook his head. "The Oracle said I'd have to sacrifice... someone I love. I can't do that."

Elara's eyes softened. "There has to be another way."

Kazuki dropped his gaze, his hands trembling. "I don't know how much longer I can keep it at bay."

Elara took his hands in hers, her warmth seeping into his skin. "Then let us help you."

Kazuki's eyes met hers, and for a moment, the world seemed to still. The Grizzly's voice was a distant echo, a shadow on the edge of his mind.

But as he looked into Elara's eyes, he felt something he hadn't felt in a long time.

Hope.
