Chapter 44: Sparks of Who We Were

That night, sleep didn't come easy.

Rina tossed and turned, visions dancing behind her eyelids—blinding flashes of light, steel corridors, Eliot's voice screaming her name.

She awoke with a gasp, drenched in sweat.

Across the room, Eliot sat upright in bed too. Wide-eyed. Awake.

"You saw it too?" he asked.

She nodded, whispering, "We were in a lab. They were trying to... separate us."

He rubbed his face.

"I remember your hand. I held on so tight. I thought if I let go, I'd lose you forever."

---

They met in the kitchen, trembling.

Neither knew what time it was—only that their hearts beat louder than the wind outside.

Rina clutched a steaming mug.

"We were in something called the HeartSync Program," she said slowly, piecing it together. "They linked our emotions, our memories."

Eliot paced. "But it was more than that. They wanted to control it. Use our connection as a weapon."

He turned to her.

"We broke out. We ran."

She stared into her mug.

"Then why are we still alive?"

---

A sudden noise outside snapped them to attention.

Footsteps. In snow.

Eliot grabbed the axe by the fireplace. Rina ducked beside the window.

A shadow passed by.

Then... silence.

Only the whisper of wind remained.

But when Rina looked down, something lay at the door.

A package.

She opened it with shaking hands.

Inside: a flash drive.

A note, handwritten.

> "You're almost there. Don't stop remembering. – S"

Savannah.
