"The greatest dangers lie in places we can't see, where our enemies are already a step ahead."
The night air outside was cold, biting, and full of tension. Rentarō stood at the entrance of the alley, his hand on the hilt of his gun, eyes scanning the horizon. His heart was still racing from the escape, but the threat looming over them couldn't be ignored.
"They'll come after us," Rentarō said, his voice low. "They know we've discovered the lab."
Hotaru, standing next to him, nodded. "We've made too much noise. They'll want to tie up loose ends before we can strike again."
Enju, who had been unusually quiet since their escape, spoke up, her voice strained with exhaustion. "So, what's our next move? We can't just keep running forever."
Rentarō turned his gaze to the darkened sky, as if seeking answers in the stars. "We find the heart of this operation. We hit them at the source."
"Meaning the lab," Hotaru confirmed. "Where they're building these soldiers."
"Exactly," Rentarō said, a flicker of determination crossing his face. "If we can take out the lab, we can put a stop to the whole thing before it spirals out of control."
"Do we have any intel on its location?" Enju asked.
Rentarō shook his head. "Not yet. But we've got allies in the city who might be able to help. The Katagiri siblings, for one."
Hotaru's eyes narrowed at the mention of the siblings, but she didn't comment on it. She'd always been more guarded around them, though Rentarō had worked with them enough to know they were capable. If they could track down the lab, it was their best shot.
"Then we find them," Rentarō said, his voice cold. "We don't have the luxury of time. We move now."
The city streets were quieter than they should have been. The once-bustling alleys and marketplaces were eerily still, the silence almost suffocating. Rentarō led the way, his steps swift and determined, while Hotaru and Enju followed close behind. They moved through the darkened streets, sticking to the shadows as much as possible.
After a few blocks, they reached a rundown apartment complex on the outskirts of District 7. The building looked like it had been abandoned for years, but Rentarō knew better. The Katagiri siblings had set up shop here.
He knocked three times in a steady rhythm on the door, and it creaked open a moment later.
"You're late," a familiar voice said.
Rentarō didn't need to look up to know it was Yūji Katagiri, the older of the siblings. He stepped into the room, followed by Hotaru and Enju.
Yūji, tall and with a cold expression, was leaning against the wall, his arms crossed. His sister, Akane, was sitting at a table in the corner, eyes scanning a set of holographic maps.
"Couldn't get here sooner," Rentarō replied, his voice clipped. "We've got a problem. The Council's got a new weapon in play, and we need your help tracking down the lab."
Yūji raised an eyebrow. "And why should we help you?"
Rentarō didn't flinch. He knew the Katagiris didn't do anything without reason, but he also knew they respected strength. "Because if we don't stop it, the entire city's at risk. And you don't need me to remind you what's at stake."
Akane glanced up from her maps. "You've got my attention. But finding the lab isn't going to be easy. It's well hidden, and the Council's not exactly going to leave a trail."
"Which is why we need your help," Rentarō said, his gaze steady. "We're running out of time."
Yūji considered it for a moment, then nodded. "Fine. We'll help. But you're going to owe us. Big time."
"Deal," Rentarō said without hesitation.
The room grew tense as Akane began pulling up data on the display, fingers dancing over the controls. Her eyes narrowed as she sifted through layers of encrypted data.
"There's something here," she said after a moment. "A facility near the industrial zone. It's heavily guarded, but it fits the profile."
Rentarō stepped closer, studying the map. "That's it. We hit it tonight."
Yūji crossed his arms again, looking at Rentarō. "You're sure about this? If the Council's involved, this won't be a simple raid. We'll be walking right into the heart of their operation."
"We don't have a choice," Rentarō replied. "If we hesitate now, it's over."
Yūji nodded, though his expression remained serious. "Alright. We'll give you the coordinates. But we're not going in alone. We'll need backup."
Rentarō glanced at Hotaru and Enju. "We can handle it."
"I'm not so sure about that," Yūji said, his tone unwavering. "This is bigger than you think. You might be strong, but you're going to need all the firepower you can get."
"Fine," Rentarō said, his tone sharp. "Get us what we need, and we'll get it done."
The Katagiris moved quickly, their network of contacts and resources proving invaluable. Within the hour, they had a plan in place. Rentarō's team would infiltrate the facility, while Yūji and Akane would provide support from the outside. They would strike fast, overwhelm the defenses, and destroy everything inside.
Rentarō knew the risks. Every step they took brought them closer to a deadly confrontation with the Council's forces. But the alternative was unthinkable. They couldn't allow this new weapon to fall into their hands. Not after what they'd already seen.
As they prepared to move out, Rentarō paused for a moment, looking at his team. Enju's eyes were fierce, her resolve unwavering. Hotaru, ever calm, was making last-minute adjustments to her gear. They had been through so much together, and yet the road ahead seemed more uncertain than ever.
"Stay focused," Rentarō said, his voice steady. "We do this together. No matter what."
With one final glance toward the Katagiris, Rentarō led the way out of the building, and the night swallowed them whole.
