Chapter 53 - Cornered
Jack's fists clench as he stares down Derek. The man's smug grin only fuels Jack's anger.
"Long time no see," Derek sneers, cracking his knuckles. "You've been busy, Jack."
"Not as busy as you," Jack retorts, eyes scanning the room for any weapon he can use. "Burying evidence. Hunting down witnesses."
"Oh, you mean Frank?" Derek laughs. "Trust me, he won't live long enough to say anything."

In the alleyway, Marcus shoves Frank into the backseat of the car. "Stay down," he orders, slamming the door shut.
"Where's Jack?!" Frank shouts, panic rising.
"He went back for the ledger," Marcus says, pulling out his phone. "Damn it, Jack, pick up."
Inside the building, the phone in Jack's pocket vibrates. Derek's eyes flick to the sound, his grin widening.
"Looks like you're in demand," Derek says, pulling a knife from his jacket. "Too bad you won't be answering that call."
---
Jack ducks as the blade slashes through the air, narrowly missing his face. He grabs a chair and swings it at Derek, who ducks and charges forward, slamming Jack into the wall.
The impact knocks the wind out of Jack, but he manages to knee Derek in the gut. Derek grunts, stumbling back, his knife clattering to the floor.
Jack dives for the knife, but Derek is faster. He grabs Jack by the collar, slamming him onto the table. Papers scatter, including the ledger.
"Looking for this?" Derek sneers, grabbing the ledger and waving it in Jack's face.
"You don't even know what's in there," Jack grits out, struggling beneath Derek's weight.
"Doesn't matter," Derek says, eyes cold. "You're not leaving this room alive."
---
Outside, Chris's voice crackles over Marcus's earpiece. "Derek's men are moving in. You need to get out of there now."
"Jack's still inside!" Marcus barks.
"Too bad," Chris says. "If you don't move, you're all dead."
Marcus curses, looking back at the building. "Hold on, Jack."
---
Inside, Jack's vision blurs as Derek's fists connect with his face, each blow harder than the last. Blood trickles down his lip, but he refuses to back down.
"You were always weak," Derek sneers, grabbing Jack by the hair. "Always a loser."
Jack's eyes narrow. "Not anymore."
Jack surges forward, headbutting Derek in the nose. Derek howls, stumbling back. Jack seizes the opportunity, grabbing the knife and slashing at Derek's arm.
Derek screams, clutching his bleeding arm. "You son of a –"
Jack doesn't let him finish. He tackles Derek to the ground, pinning him with one knee as he presses the knife to Derek's throat.
"Where's Lisa?" Jack demands, voice low and deadly.
Derek glares up at him, blood dripping from his nose. "You're too late. She's already planning her next move. And when she's done, you'll be nothing but a memory."
Jack presses the knife harder against Derek's throat, his jaw clenched. "Tell me where she is."
Derek just laughs, eyes glinting with malice. "Go to hell."

Jack's fist tightens around the knife. He could end Derek right now. But that would mean losing the only lead he has to Lisa.
Jack takes a deep breath, releasing Derek and standing up. "You're not worth it."
Derek coughs, blood staining his teeth. "You think you're a hero now? You're nothing."
Jack walks away, grabbing the ledger from the floor. "We'll see who's nothing when I take down Lisa."
The battle with Derek may be over, but the war against Lisa is just beginning.
