Chapter 12: the Queen's Gambit

Location: Jeju Island – Ricci Villa, South Korea

Time: 01:37 PM

The sound of the wind scraping against broken shutters echoed through the villa, whispering secrets of a darker past. In the villa's old library, Lucien stood by a rusted filing cabinet he'd never dared open until now.

Yuna watched him from the shadows, silent but brimming with unasked questions. Her presence was no longer that of a pawn no, she was a queen carved from pain and sharpened by truth. The woman who once only saw numbers now saw patterns… and those patterns led to blood.

Lucien pulled out a file labeled in faded ink: Phase Zero Genetic Acquisition Protocols.

Inside: a photo of a young girl. Pale skin. Curious eyes. Her.

Yuna stepped closer. "They had me mapped before I could even read."

Lucien handed her the file, his voice unreadable. "You weren't born. You were designed."

She flipped through medical charts and surveillance logs. "And yet, you never saw it coming."

Lucien turned away. "That's the part that keeps me up at night."

Outside, Min-Jae's voice crackled through the comms. "We have movement. Drone scans picked up heat signatures armed. Four vehicles. ETA, fifteen minutes."

Yuna stiffened. "Drevin's people?"

"Most likely," Lucien replied. "He wouldn't wait long once he knew we went dark."

Location: Jeju Coastline Hidden Caves

Time: 02:10 PM

Lucien, Yuna, and Min-Jae moved through a series of underground passageways connected to the villa old smuggler routes now repurposed for tactical escape. The air was wet, sharp with salt and gun oil. The walls pulsed with the hum of distant tides.

As they reached the final tunnel, Min-Jae halted.

"There's a boat docked outside. Not ours."

Lucien raised a silenced pistol. "Stay close."

They emerged cautiously and found someone waiting.

A woman. Tall. Raven-haired.

Eyes glacial, clad in a black coat tailored like armor. Her accent was European. Her expression: war.

"Lucien Ricci," she said flatly. "We need to talk."

Lucien's jaw tightened. "Elara Drevin."

Yuna blinked. "Drevin's… sister?"

"His mistake," Elara said, stepping aside. "And your only chance at surviving him."

Flashback: Geneva Eight Years Ago

Aleksei Drevin and Elara sat across from Gabriel Ricci.

"You said you could deliver the girl," Aleksei murmured, lighting a cigarette.

Gabriel shrugged. "I can. But Lucien has eyes everywhere. We'll need a distraction. Something global."

Elara's eyes narrowed. "And you'll risk your entire family?"

Gabriel smiled coldly. "It's not risk. It's evolution."

Location: Jeju Island – Elara's Private Boat

Time: 03:12 PM

Yuna sat across from Elara in the cabin, both women silent. The hum of the ocean between them was filled with tension and unspoken understanding.

"You were meant to be his tool," Elara said. "Just like I was once my brother's shadow."

"I'm not anyone's tool anymore," Yuna said.

Elara poured two glasses of water. "No. But Drevin doesn't care what you want. He cares what you can become. If your genetic key activates, he believes you'll be able to do more than predict moves you'll control them."

Yuna's fingers tapped the glass. "And Lucien?"

Elara's gaze sharpened. "He thinks he can protect you. But love is just another vulnerability. And Drevin will use it."

Location: Tokyo – Argent Circle Subterranean Base

Time: 06:45 PM (Local Time)

Kazuo Shin entered the darkened hall lined with obsidian pillars. In the center: a ritual platform where Syndicate traitors were once judged.

Now, it was a lab.

Yuna's digital profile floated midair. Around it: simulations of neural behavior, hormone spikes, and biochemical response to emotional trauma.

Drevin pointed at one highlighted sequence.

"This," he said, "is what makes her dangerous. The moment she breaks she rewrites the rules. Not even Ricci will be able to predict her then."

Kazuo grinned. "So, we break her."

Drevin nodded. "Stage the illusion. We don't need to kill Ricci. Just make her think he's dead."

Location: Ricci HQ Seoul – War Room

Time: 10:13 PM

Lucien stood over a war map, coordinating with loyal operatives across three continents.

"Pull intel on Drevin's remaining allies. I want faces, funds, safe houses. Burn the bridges before he uses them."

Min-Jae looked up. "And Yuna?"

Lucien's expression flickered. "She stays with me. Protected."

But protection was already out of reach.

Across the room, Yuna opened a sealed file from Elara.

Inside: a photo from years ago. Her mother. In a lab. Pregnant.

Next to her: Aleksei Drevin.

Scrawled in pen: "She was carrying his heir."

The paper fell from Yuna's hands.

Lucien stepped forward. "What is it?"

Her voice was ice. "Tell me it's a lie."

Lucien read the photo. Silence fell like a blade.

"I don't know," he said honestly.

Yuna stared at him with something wounded, something dangerous.

"Then maybe I was never yours to protect."

Unknown Location: Surveillance Feed

Drevin watched the split-screen footage.

Lucien. Yuna. Elara. Min-Jae.

Each tracked. Each calculated.

"Deploy the mimic," he said.

Kazuo stepped forward with a suitcase.

Inside: a mask. A voice modulator. A blood sample.

The perfect copy of Lucien Ricci.

Drevin's voice turned cold. "Let her watch him die. And the queen will become our weapon."
