Several days had passed since the traveling merchants departed, leaving behind the enigmatic words about "Artificers" that still echoed in the minds of Leonardo da Vinci and Kiana, the new leader of Ashwind Post. It had ignited a potent curiosity and a host of unanswered questions. While the village's restoration continued unabated, an atmosphere of burgeoning hope was tinged with an underlying uncertainty about the future.
Da Vinci found himself spending more time in contemplation. During the day, he was engrossed in helping the villagers plan and construct necessities, but the quiet solitude of the night was often dedicated to pondering the nature of the mysterious power he possessed. He meticulously reviewed past events, the brush's responsiveness, and his own sensations while wielding its energy. There was a clear connection to his "will" and a profound "understanding" of what he intended to "draw." Yet, the term "Artifice," as used by the old traveler, suggested something grander, perhaps more systemic or complex than he had initially imagined.
Kiana, too, seemed equally preoccupied. During inspections of the ongoing work or in discussions with the village elders, her gaze would often drift towards Da Vinci, filled with a mixture of curiosity and a slight, new apprehension (though not outright distrust). If he truly was an "Artificer," what did that mean for him, for his safety, and for the future of Ashwind Post?
One morning, amidst the usual bustle of the village starting its day, a familiar figure burst forth from the treeline with the speed of a gale, momentarily startling the guards and villagers nearby before they recognized him.
"Brother Ryu!" Kiana called out as the young samurai, clad in his dark, practical attire, his black hair tied back neatly, approached. His sharp, observant eyes quickly scanned the surroundings, noting the changed state of the village, the lingering signs of battle, and the damage still under repair. A look of surprise mingled with concern crossed his face before his gaze locked onto Da Vinci, the "outsider" he had never seen before, standing not far from Kiana.
Mistrust and the ingrained instincts of a spy trained to identify threats to his village and leader took over. In a split second, Ryu decided Da Vinci was the cause of the turmoil, or worse, an enemy in disguise!
"Who are you! How dare you harm our leader and our village!" Ryu roared гневно (angrily), drawing his long katana from its sheath with a swift, dangerous movement. He lunged towards Da Vinci, intending to strike him down in a single blow!
Da Vinci was startled by the sudden, unprovoked attack. Yet, with instincts honed over a lifetime, he reflexively prepared to raise the golden brush in defense, though a flicker of doubt crossed his mind as to whether it would respond with any power.
"Brother, stop!" Kiana's voice cut through the air, sharp and commanding. She darted between Da Vinci and Ryu with breathtaking speed, narrowly intercepting the attack. The razor-sharp tip of the young samurai's katana halted, a mere hair's breadth from Kiana's throat.
Ryu's eyes widened slightly as Kiana blocked his path. "Kiana! Step aside! This man is..."
"Brother Ryu! Calm yourself!" Kiana affirmed, her voice firm. "He is not an enemy! This is Da Vinci... the one who saved us from that Stalker Unit, and helped Elder Eldrin."
The young samurai lowered his blade slightly, but his eyes remained filled with suspicion and a multitude of questions. He took in Kiana's weary appearance and glanced again at the widespread damage around the village. "What happened here, Kiana? Where is Elder Eldrin? Why is the village in this state?"
Once the situation had de-escalated and Ryu had sheathed his katana, Kiana recounted all the events that had transpired during his absence: the brutal attack by the Stalker Unit, Eldrin's grievous injuries, the mysterious fiery power she had unknowingly unleashed, and Da Vinci's astonishing creative force that had ultimately destroyed the mechanical beast. She also explained Eldrin's decision to entrust her with the temporary leadership of the village.
Ryu listened with a grim and increasingly shocked expression. He was deeply grieved to hear of Eldrin's critical condition, the man who was like a father and mentor to him. When Kiana finished, he, in turn, reported on his own mission. He had just returned from negotiations and intelligence gathering in a small town on the eastern border of the Nebula Empire. The news he brought was unsettling: there were indications that the Nebula Empire was preparing for a major offensive, and rumors of even more dangerous "Hunters" being dispatched than the previous Stalker Units.
After absorbing all the information, especially Da Vinci's account of the traveler's words regarding "Artificers," Da Vinci, Kiana, and Ryu all realized how little they truly knew about this world, its various mystical powers, and the true nature of the threats they faced.
The three of them decided to visit Eldrin, who was still recovering in the infirmary tent. His condition had stabilized, but he remained extremely weak, drifting in and out of consciousness. When Da Vinci or Kiana gently broached the subject of "Artificers" and the ancient legends of this world, Eldrin, despite his frailty, gathered his strength to offer a clue.
"Power..." Eldrin whispered, his voice faint, his gaze shifting between Da Vinci and Kiana. "...it holds both great boons... and terrible costs... If you wish to know... the stories of this world... the people of the past... or even... the hidden potentials within..." He paused, a wracking cough shaking his frame slightly. "...you should... try visiting the 'Athenaeum of Embers'..."
He managed to explain, in fragmented sentences, that it was an ancient, long-abandoned library, located some distance north of the village, towards a range of desolate mountains. The journey might take half a day, or perhaps a full day, but the path was far from safe. It was known territory for stray mechanical patrols or, worse, ferocious mutated beasts. Eldrin didn't, or couldn't, provide all the details about the Athenaeum or what they might find there, leaving it as a tantalizing mystery for them to uncover.
Eldrin's words ignited a spark of hope and intense curiosity in all three of them. They immediately agreed that a journey to the "Athenaeum of Embers" could be the key to unlocking many of the puzzles they faced, and might yield information vital for the village's survival.
A serious discussion ensued about who should undertake this critical and perilous mission. Ryu volunteered, eager to gather intelligence that could aid in the village's defense. However, given his recent long journey, the village's immediate need for his skills in defense, and the necessity of having someone trustworthy to report to Eldrin (should he regain more lucidity), his offer was carefully considered and then set aside. Ultimately, Kiana, as the current leader and the strongest warrior in the village, decided she would go, accompanied by Da Vinci, whose intellect and potential ability to decipher ancient texts or understand complex mechanisms would be invaluable. Ryu would remain in Ashwind Post, serving as the main defensive force, overseeing the village's security, and keeping Eldrin informed, ready to deal with any new threats that might arise in Kiana's absence.
Before their departure at dawn the next day, Kiana meticulously assigned various responsibilities to Ryu and the other village elders. Ryu, in a quiet moment, pressed a small, sharp dagger into Kiana's hand. "For protection, Sister Kiana," he said, his voice earnest. "I will guard the village with my life."
Da Vinci, too, made his preparations discreetly. He gathered some blank parchments he had managed to find, to serve as a makeshift notebook, and a few small tools he had fashioned. That night, he once again tried to meditate and connect with the golden brush, focusing his will with intense concentration. To his surprise and relief, the tip of the brush emitted a faint, soft golden glow. It was more responsive to his intent than it had been in weeks. While he still couldn't "draw" anything complex, it was a positive sign, a small flicker of hope that its power was slowly, perhaps, returning.
As the first light of the twin suns touched the horizon, Da Vinci and Kiana set off from Ashwind Post. The atmosphere between them was still somewhat reserved, a product of their different personalities and the unspoken burdens they each carried, but there was also a growing sense of being "companions in fate," bound together to face the unknown and its dangers.
They journeyed through a landscape even more desolate and perilous than the immediate surroundings of their village. Da Vinci occasionally tried to engage Kiana in light conversation, partly to ease the tension and partly to understand her better. Kiana, though still a woman of few words, began to respond a little more openly than before.
They had to rely on all their combined skills to survive this trek. Kiana showcased her remarkable combat prowess and survival instincts in the harsh wilderness, while Da Vinci utilized his keen observation, analytical mind, and broad knowledge to navigate, avoid unseen dangers, or solve immediate problems, such as finding a hidden source of clean water or starting a fire with unconventional methods.
It wasn't long before they encountered their first true obstacle. They were ambushed by a flock of "Shadow Vultures," large, mutated avian predators with beaks and talons as sharp as razors. They swooped down from the gloomy sky with terrifying speed, aiming to tear the two travelers apart.
Kiana instantly drew her twin swords, her stance alert. "Da Vinci! Watch out! Their talons are venomous!"
Da Vinci, though startled, remained calm. He assessed the dozen or so vultures, then quickly evaluated his options. Since the brush couldn't yet create powerful offensive weapons, he decided to use it differently. With a swift flick of his wrist, a faint golden light emanated from the brush, forming a small but incredibly resilient "net of light" that shot out and entangled the wings of a vulture diving слишком (too) close. It stumbled and fell to the ground. Simultaneously, he "drew" several perfectly sized, smooth stones, which appeared мгновенно (instantly) in Kiana's waiting hand.
"Kiana! Use these! Aim for their eyes!" Da Vinci shouted.
Though surprised by Da Vinci's actions, Kiana reacted with lightning speed. She hurled the stones Da Vinci had "created" with deadly accuracy, striking the eyes of the remaining vultures. The tactic disoriented them, causing them to collide mid-air, giving Kiana the opening she needed to dispatch several more with her twin blades. The fight was fierce and draining, but eventually, they managed to drive off the remaining Shadow Vultures, though not without sustaining a few minor scratches and a good deal of fatigue.
After overcoming further challenges, Da Vinci and Kiana finally reached the area where, according to Eldrin, the "Athenaeum of Embers" was located.
Before them stood the colossal ruins of an ancient edifice, ravaged by time and neglect almost beyond recognition. It was shrouded in thick vines and a patina of green-black moss. Sections of the building had crumbled into piles of stone and rubble, yet an undeniable aura of past grandeur and solemnity still clung to the site. An eerie silence pervaded the surroundings, broken only by the wind sighing through the dilapidated structures. The once-majestic entrance was now partially collapsed, leaving only a dark, foreboding passage leading into unseen depths. Faint, weathered symbols and ancient script were carved into the stone lintels that still stood defiantly, though faded with the passage of ages.
Da Vinci felt a subtle "energy" emanating from within the Athenaeum. It wasn't malevolent, but complex – perhaps the accumulated energy of centuries of knowledge, a lingering trace of ancient magic, or even some dangerous power that had been sealed away.
The two of them stood before the dark and daunting entrance. Kiana drew her twin swords, her eyes narrowed with determination and vigilance. Da Vinci clutched the golden brush tightly in his hand, unsure of how much power it could now channel, but ready to face whatever lay ahead. They exchanged a brief, unspoken glance, a silent acknowledgment of the unknown they were about to enter. Then, together, they stepped forward, into the darkness and the secrets that awaited them within the hidden Athenaeum of Embers.
