[ Next day ]
[ Pharmacy ]
Alex stands near the entrance. A moment later, Jake strides through the sliding doors. He spots Alex instantly, his expression tightening when he sees how tense she looks. Without saying anything, he pulls her into a quick hug.
"Hey," He murmurs against her hair. "It's okay."
Alex nods, pressing her face into his chest for a second. Then she draws back, cheeks pink.
"Ready?"
"No. But.. yes." Alex says.
They walk together to the pharmacy counter. Jake's hand settles reassuringly on her back. When it's their turn, Alex opens her mouth then nothing comes out. Her throat's dry, words stuck.
Jake doesn't hesitate.
"Hi. We need emergency contraception. Plan B or whatever equivalent you have."
The pharmacist, an older woman with gentle eyes, doesn't even blink. "Of course. Do you have any questions? It's most effective within 72 hours, ideally sooner."
Jake nods. "We know. Today's still inside that window."
Alex wants to die on the spot from embarrassment, but Jake just gives her hand a squeeze.
"Alright. Here you go. Take it with food if you can, it may cause nausea. And don't be worried if your next period is a bit off."
Jake pays for it without flinching, sliding his card across before Alex can even reach for her wallet.
"Jake-" She starts to protest.
"Don't." He says simply, giving her a look that brooks no argument.
They step aside, letting an older man shuffle up with a cough syrup bottle. Alex clutches the small paper bag to her chest.
"Let's get her some water and a snack so you can take it." He says.
They pile into Jake's car. Alex sits in the passenger seat, holding the pill bottle like it's a grenade. Jake watches her for a long moment, then reaches over, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Hey. You're okay ?"
Alex nods slowly, a tiny smile tugging at her lips despite everything. "Yeah. Okay."
[ One Month Later ]
[ Alex's Bedroom ]
Alex sits cross-legged on her bed, nervously twisting her fingers. Her phone is buzzing with a new message from Jake, but for once, she's too preoccupied to read it as soon as it arrives.
On her dresser sits Haley's little pink pill pack. For the past month, Alex's mornings have quietly started by taking one thanks to Haley, who offered without hesitation. But the truth is, Haley's pack isn't a long-term plan. And Alex knows it.
Haley flops dramatically onto the bed beside her. "Okay, you look like you're about to vomit on your chem homework. What's up?"
"I need to.. talk to Mom. About getting my own prescription." Alex sighs.
Haley's eyebrows shoot up. "Wow. That's actually super responsible. But also holy crap, that's gonna be awkward."
"Tell me about it." Alex drops her forehead to her knees. "I mean, she'll probably just.. look at me with that patented combination of horror and rightful anger."
"Yeah, with a side of 'my little girl is growing up' emotional meltdown. Still, better she knows. If you keep sneaking my pills, it'll slip eventually like if I miss one or she checks the pack." Haley snorts.
Alex groans. "I hate that you're right."
Haley smirks, poking her in the side. "Also, you kinda glow lately. It's obvious you and Jake are very... active." She says, wriggling her eyebrows.
Alex turns beet red. "Oh my God, can we not?"
"Sorry, it's just cute. Gross, but cute. And Jake's good to you. So Mom will freak out, yeah, but she'll also realize it's better to help you be safe than pretend you're still twelve." Haley says.
Alex lifts her head, biting her lip. "Will you stay close? Like, lurk in the kitchen or something while I talk to her?"
"Oh, I'll do more than that. I'll swoop in at the first tear. Or if she starts polishing her shotgun." Haley winks. "Promise."
Alex finally manages a small smile. "Thanks. You're actually not the worst sister."
"Please, I'm the best sister. And after this? You owe me a month of laundry duty."
Alex rolls her eyes, but when she leans over to hug Haley, it's genuine and tight. "Deal. Okay. I'll do it tonight after dinner."
"Good." Haley squeezes her shoulders. "Now let's plan your opening line so you don't blurt out something like, 'So I've been regularly getting dicked by Jake..' and watch Mom faint."
Alex covers her face with both hands, groaning. "Kill me now."
Haley just laughs, tugging her into a side hug. "Nope. You're living through this, Dunphy style, awkward, loud, and surrounded by our crazy family."
[ Later that evening ]
Alex stands in the doorway to the kitchen, arms crossed. Claire is tidying up after dinner, humming distractedly. Haley is at the counter, pretending to scroll on her phone but keeping a hawk eye on Alex.
Alex clears her throat. "Mom? Can we, um… talk for a second?"
Claire looks up, instantly alert. "Of course, honey. Is something wrong?"
"No, not like, not bad wrong. Just.. personal." Alex tries to smile. It comes out more like a grimace.
Claire puts the dish towel down, giving Alex her full mom attention. "Alright. What's on your mind?"
Haley makes an exaggerated zipper motion across her lips, signaling she'll stay silent. Alex takes a breath that feels like she's about to jump off a cliff.
"So...I've been seeing Jake for a while now."
Claire nods, smiling. "Yes, and I've noticed how happy he makes you. That's wonderful, honey."
"Right, it is. He does. Um, so..we've gotten... closer. Like, really close."
The smile freezes on Claire's face. Her eyes widen slightly. "Oh."
"And I've been, well, I didn't want to hide this, so, I think I should go on birth control. Like, actually get a prescription. Not just.. keep using Haley's." Alex says.
Claire blinks. "Using Haley's? Haley!"
Haley winces. "Technically, she only 'borrowed' them. I mean, would you rather she was unsafe?"
Claire holds up a hand, looking halfway between flustered and about to give a TED talk on responsibility.
"Okay. Okay. I'm trying to process this." She presses her lips together, then sighs. "Alex, I'm glad you came to me. Truly. It's better than sneaking around. I wish you'd told me sooner."
Alex avoids her mom gaze. "I was scared. I didn't want you to think I was irresponsible or disappoint you."
Claire's expression softens. She steps forward and cups Alex's cheek. "Oh, honey. I'm not disappointed. You're growing up. I don't love picturing it because you're still my little girl who used to give lectures to her stuffed animals but I'd rather you be safe and supported. Always."
Alex's eyes sting. "Thanks, Mom." Claire pulls her into a hug, squeezing tight.
"We'll make an appointment with Dr. Singer this week. We'll do it together."
Haley breaks in, smirking. "Can I say I told you so now? Because I totally called that she wouldn't flip out."
Claire points at Haley. "Don't get smug. You're still in trouble for handing out your prescription like Halloween candy."
Haley laughs, then grabs Alex into a group hug. "Worth it."
[ Next day ]
[ Jake's studio ]
Alex sits cross-legged on Jake's bed, a textbook open beside her, though neither of them has really touched it. Jake is at his desk, checking something on his laptop, but he keeps glancing back at her like he can't help himself.
"So.. I told my mom." Alex says suddenly.
Jake swivels in his chair, eyebrows lifting.
"Told her.. what, exactly? That your boyfriend is a genius, devastatingly handsome hacker? Or the part where we keep sneaking off to make out every chance we get?"
Alex rolls her eyes but can't stop her smile. "Ha ha. No, I told her about us. All of it. And that I wanted to get my own prescription instead of just using Haley's."
Jake's expression shifts the cocky grin easing into something warmer. He stands up and crosses the tiny space to sit beside her, his hand coming to rest lightly on her thigh. "Yeah? How'd that go?"
Alex exhales, her shoulders dropping. "Better than I thought. She didn't freak out. Actually she was really supportive. Wants to take me to the doctor herself. I kinda felt like I could breathe again after." She says.
Jake's thumb strokes a lazy circle against her leg. "Good. I didn't want you carrying all that stress. You already overthink everything else."
Alex narrows her eyes at him, playfully. "Hey! I do not overthink everything." Jake catches her hand, holding it against his heart.
"You do. And I kinda love that about you. Just like how you ramble when you're nervous and how your glasses slide down your nose when you're reading."
Alex bites her lip, trying to hide how hard she's blushing. "You're such a sap."
"Only for you, nerd."
He leans in to kiss her, slowly, his free hand coming up to cup her cheek. Alex melts into it, one of her hands curling into his shirt. When they break apart, she's smiling.
"So you're okay with it? Me being all honest with my mom?"
"Yeah. I like that you're not hiding me." He gives her a grin, cocky again, but softer around the edges. "Plus, makes it official. You're mine. The whole world or at least the Dunphy family knows it."
Alex laughs, nudging his shoulder with hers. "Yeah, yeah. I'm yours." She says, unaware of the effect of her words.
Jake pulls her back in for another kiss, deeper this time, his tongue slipping and teasing her as the textbook slips forgotten to the floor.
[ Saturday night ]
The music is already thumping from half a block away. Colored lights flash across the lawn. Alex swallows, tugging at the hem of her skirt.
"This is… a lot of people." She fidgets with the bracelet on her wrist, heart pounding.
Jake just laughs, leaning over to kiss her temple. "Relax. You'll be fine. I promise. Stick with me."
She glares at him, trying to hide her nerves. "If anyone tries to spike my drink, you're legally obligated to tackle them."
"Duly noted."Jake grins as they get inside.
The house is packed. Red cups, booming bass, clusters of people dancing or shouting over each other. Jake keeps a firm hand on the small of her back, steering her through the chaos.
They find a spot by the kitchen island, where Jake grabs himself a beer and a soda for Alex.
"You sure you don't want something stronger?" He teases her.
Alex gives him a look. "I'd like to actually remember tonight, thanks." But she end up taking a beer too.
He pulls her closer by the waist, grinning as Alex looks around her with curious eyes, she's never been to a party, it's all so new for her.
Jake manages to get Alex to dance with him. At first she's stiff, self-conscious, glancing around at the people grinding around them. But Jake leans in, whispers in her ear, "Forget them. It's just you and me."
He rests his forehead against hers, their bodies pressed close. Slowly, she relaxes, letting herself move with him. By the third song, she's laughing breathlessly, arms looped around his neck.
He brings her to a quieter corner, less visible. His hands moving across her voluptuous hourglass figure. Twirling her around in a half-circle, Jake feels something extremely soft and squishy pressing against his groin. Alex takes a step backwards, arching her lower back and pushing her hips back into his crotch slowly rubbing her plush rear in circular motions.
Her pace is slow and passionate, massaging his aching hardness by grinding herself on him.
Lost in the music, Alex keep grinding her jean covered ass against his swelling shaft, feeling it grow harder with each movement. Jake is incapable of controlling his hips that starts to move on its own thrusting against her.
The beat slow down as the music end and the next one start.
They slip outside for some air. The night is cooler, the noise muffled behind them. Jake presses her up against the porch railing, stealing a kiss that leaves them both a little dazed, especially after that dance.
"What was that?" Jake asks, surprised at the sensual dance Alex gave him.
"Was it bad?" Alex asks shyly, afraid to have disappointed him.
"No babe, that was good. It makes me wish I could spend the night with you." Jake answers. He leans into her, kissing her hard, their tongues interlocking as his hands on her rear, squeezing her ass through her jeans. He kiss her for long minutes, her hands moving all over his body, over his thighs and sides, up his back, to curl her finger round his hair.
"Alright, down girl." Jake says playfully, separating his lips form hers while she tries to catch them again.
"I want you to meet some friends." He says, slapping her ass gently before giving her a quick kiss.
Jake leads Alex through the crowd until they reach a circle of familiar faces lounging on the big sectional couch and half-sunk into bean bags. The cheerleaders, Jennifer, Evelyn, and Sarah all have perfect hair and glossy smiles, while James, William, and Pete look like they've just empty too much beer cup.
"Hey, look who finally showed up!" James calls out, clapping Jake on the shoulder as they come over. His grin widens when he spots Alex. "And you brought the girl. About time we met her."
Jake slips an arm around Alex's waist, pulling her closer. "Guys, this is my girlfriend Alex. Alex, these are my friends James, William, Pete, Jennifer, Evelyn and Sarah."
Alex manages a small wave, feeling very aware of her plain top and the way her hair probably isn't doing anything remotely glamorous.
Jennifer leans forward, giving Alex a once-over that's not exactly subtle. "So this is the girl who's been keeping our boy busy?" She says with a teasing smirk.
"Hey, be nice Jen." Jake warns, but he's smirking too.
Evelyn nudges Sarah, whispering something that makes them both giggle, but Sarah surprises Alex by flashing her a warm smile. "Don't let them scare you. Jake's talked about you. In, like a borderline embarrassing way."
Alex's eyebrows shoot up. "Really?"
"Okay, rude."Jake groans, hiding his face against her shoulder.
James laughs, tossing a stress ball at Jake that bounces off his chest. "Anyway, you're welcome here, Alex. Anyone Jake's serious about is cool with us."
Alex blinks at that, her stomach doing a little somersault. She glances at Jake, who just squeezes her hip and gives her a grin that's all pride.
Alex finds herself perched on a patio chair, a plastic cup of beer in her hand, she refused the tequila shot Jennifer tried to hand her. Jake's nearby, half-watching her while talking weightlifting routines with Pete and William.
Sarah ends up sliding into the seat beside Alex, crossing her legs.
"So, Alex, are you always this quiet, or is it just because we're terrifying?" She asks, her tone light, almost teasing but not unkind.
Alex pushes up her glasses nervously. "Maybe.. seventy percent you're terrifying, thirty percent because I'm processing that I'm at a party instead of preparing for my next exam."
"God, you and Jake are perfect. You should've seen him last month helping Pete do his stats homework, it was like watching a sad math tutor documentary." Sarah laughs.
Alex's lips tug up despite herself. "Yeah, he's smarter than he lets people think. Or maybe people just don't notice."
Sarah nudges her shoulder. "Well, he notices you. And for the record? You're cool. Quiet, but cool."
Meanwhile, Jake keeps glancing over at Alex every few seconds. James elbows him with a grin.
"Man, relax. She's really got her claws on you, it's kind of adorable." James says playfully.
Jake just smirks. "Jealous?"
"A little," James admits with exaggerated regret. "But hey, she seems to have fun. You did good."
Evelyn manages to lure Alex into a half-circle where the girls are gossiping. Alex awkwardly hugs her cup, listening more than talking, eyes widening at their stories, like when Sarah admits she suck James dick in the toilet and was expecting him to be bigger from all his talk. At some point, Jennifer leans over conspiratorially.
"So. Alex. Is Jake, like this sweet boyfriend vibe all the time? Or does he have that whole bad boy thing behind closed doors, taking you over and over until he's spend?"
Alex turns red. "I'm not answering that."
"Oh my god, he totally does!" Jennifer squeals, high-fiving Evelyn.
Alex hides her face in her hands, groaning, but she's laughing too, probably from the three beer she's had. It feels shockingly good to be included, teased, treated like she belongs.
Jake finally comes to reclaim her, sliding an arm around her waist from behind. "Having fun?" He whispers, his breath warm against her ear.
Alex tries to glare at him, but she's smiling. "Maybe. Slightly."
Jake grins, kissing her nape. "You look happy. I like seeing you like this."
Alex looks up at him, feeling that strange, dizzy lightness she's been discovering more and more around him. "Yeah me too."
Later in the night, Alex finds herself curled under Jake's arm on one of the outdoor sofas. Plastic cups in hand, laughter echoing under the string lights.
James is in the middle of telling a ridiculous story about their freshman year football hazing, complete with exaggerated gestures that have Jennifer nearly in tears. Evelyn keeps interjecting with sarcastic one-liners that make even Alex giggle.
James shifts closer to Jake, waits until most of the group is distracted by Sarah trying to show Alex a short of a dance on her iPhone, then palms something into Jake's hand.
"Little thank you for helping me. Keep it chill, yeah?" He says with a grin.
Jake smirks, slipping the tiny bag of weed into his pocket like it's nothing. "Try not to fail econ next."
Jake drops back into his seat and pulls Alex a bit closer, resting his chin on top of her head.
"What did James want?" She whispers, voice low so only he can hear.
"Just paying me back for something." Jake brushes his thumb over her arm, and that quiet way he touches her makes her stomach flutter.
"Hey, Alex, since you're practically family now, we've all decided you're on the hook for tutoring if we bomb our next exams."Jennifer leans over with a mischievous grin.
Alex blinks. "Wait, what? I didn't sign up for that."
"Tough luck."Jennifer teases, reaching over to ruffle her hair.
Jake just laughs, hugging her tighter and pulling her out of Jennifer reach.
Alex tries to muster a put-upon sigh, but she's glowing cheeks warm, laughter bubbling out more freely than she'd have believed possible a few months ago.
The party is starting to thin out, music a little softer. Jake's hand is snug around Alex's as they step off the porch. She's flushed and giggly, leaning just slightly into him with every step.
When they reach Jake's car parked down the street, Alex tugs at his arm, peering up at him with a crinkle of worry between her brows.
"Are you sure you can drive?" She asks, her words a little slow.
Jake lets out a soft huff of amusement. "Yeah, babe. I had like, two beers, hours ago. I'm good."
Alex narrows her eyes, trying to look stern but her face cracks into a crooked grin.
"Meanwhile I think I had... five cups? Six? Who even knows what was in them."
"Yeah, lightweight." Jake teases, smirking as he opens the passenger door for her.
She swats weakly at his chest. "Rude."
Jake helps her settle in, buckling her seatbelt when her fingers fumble with it. She bites back a smile at how gentle he is, how sure his hands are even now. Once he closes the door and rounds to the driver's side, she watches him slip in with a relaxed ease.
"See? Totally fine." He says, giving her knee a squeeze as he starts the car.
Alex lets out a small sigh, letting herself sink back against the seat. "If you say so... but just know if we die, I'm haunting you forever."
Jake chuckles low in his throat, pulling away from the curb. "Honestly? That sounds kind of fun."
Alex makes a strangled laugh, covering her face. "You're the worst." But her heart's still fluttering, warm and happy, even as the streetlights blur past outside.
The drive is quiet for a bit, just the soft hum of the engine and a faint indie playlist Jake queued up earlier. Alex has her cheek pressed against the cool window, eyes half-lidded, her hair a little messy from the party.
Then she speaks up, voice soft and tipsy-loose. "You know, you're kind of... annoyingly attractive."
"Oh yeah? Annoyingly?"Jake's eyebrows shoot up, a grin pulling at his mouth.
"Mhm." Alex nods exaggeratedly, eyes closing again. "Like. It's distracting. And unfair. And then you look at me all... and my brain forgets how to function."
Jake lets out a bark of laughter. "I'll try to tone down the intensity then. Wouldn't want your scary genius brain to short-circuit."
"It's your fault. I used to have such a calm, uncomplicated life. Books, equations, no boys messing it up." She cracks one eye open to glare at him.
"And now you've got me. Ruining everything. " He teases, reaching over at a stoplight to run his hand lightly on her thigh.
Alex's breath stutters, her skin breaking out in goosebumps. "...Yeah. Totally ruining it." She says.
"...But it's also the happiest I've ever been." She adds quieter, almost like she didn't mean to let it slip.
Jake's smile softens, something almost tender flickering in his eyes. "Good. Because just so we're clear I'm not going anywhere."
Alex tries to hide her sudden, overwhelmed grin behind her hand, but Jake sees it.
"Ugh, stop being so perfect." She mumbles.
"No promises." Jake smirks, giving her an intense look before focusing back on the road.
Alex shifts in her seat, twisting to look at Jake more directly. Her voice is still tinged with that tipsy looseness, but there's a spark of mischief there now.
"So.. what if I didn't want to say goodnight yet?" She says.
Jake glances at her, eyebrow raised, his lips twitching. "Oh? And what exactly are you proposing?"
"Maybe, a quiet, non-life-ruining suggestion." Alex bites her lip, eyes darting toward the windshield as she tries to find the right words. "You could.. um, stay over? In my room. Just for the night. You live a bit far amd you've been drinking, it'll be safer to drive home tomorrow, right?"
Jake lets out a low laugh, shooting her a look that's equal parts surprised and amused. "Alex, are you trying to sneak me into your house?"
"Shhh!" She swats at him, cheeks flaming. "Keep your voice down, we're not even there yet!"
Jake grins, leaning his elbow on the window, watching her squirm. "I don't know, this sounds dangerously like a teenage movie cliché. You're the innocent girl conspiring with her bad influence boyfriend."
"First off, I am not conspiring. Yet. And second shut up, it's not that cliché." Alex narrows her eyes.
"Mmm. Want me that badly, huh?" He hums, teasing.
Alex gasps, shoving his shoulder as she blushes. "I hate you." But then she's hiding a smile behind her hand.
"...I might need to enlist Haley, though," She admits. "She's better at lying. And covering for me. I could text her when we pull up."
Jake's mouth pulls into a wide, wicked grin. "Your sister's going to be thrilled. Bet she's been waiting for the day you actually act like a sneaky teenager."
Alex rolls her eyes but she's still grinning, heart fluttering all over again. "Whatever. You're worth it."
Jake pulls up a few houses away just to be safe. The glow of the streetlamp spills across Alex's face as she hurriedly types on her phone, thumbs tapping in frantic, half-drunken precision.
'Haley. Pls pls pls help me sneak Jake in for the night. I'll owe you so bad. I mean it.' Aled sends the text.
A few tense moments later, her screen lights up.
'Omg. You're so naughty sis! Fine. Dad's watching TV and mom is out with Mitchell. Tell Jake to get in through the side door. Quietly.' Alex read Haley's response.
Alex lets out a relieved sigh. "Okay. She's in."
"Your sister's dangerously useful." Jake smirks, leaning over.
"Let's just get inside before I change my mind."
Jake nearly trips over a stray garden hose, catches himself on the siding with a muted curse.
Alex whips around, eyes wide. "Do you want to die? Because if my dad comes out here with a baseball bat, I'm not saving you."
Jake grins, whispering close against her ear.
"If we get caught, I'll say it's all your fault."
She swats his chest, but her smile betrays her. "Just come on."
She leads him to the second entrance then tell him to wait while she goes back to the front door.
Alex tiptoes through the front door, shoes in hand, trying to make her ninja escape to the staircase on wobbly legs. But before she can even plant one foot on the bottom step-
"Hey! Look who decided to grace us with her presence. Only, oh, two hours past curfew." Her dad voice, startlingly cheerful.
Alex freezes, whipping around to see her dad on the couch, still in his PJ pants and robe, munching on a late-night bowl of cereal.
"Dad! I, uh" She fumbles for words, clutching her shoes like they might shield her from embarrassment.
Phil just gives her a raised eyebrow and a lopsided grin.
"Relax. I'm not gonna launch a full FBI investigation. Just.. maybe next time text me so I don't have to imagine you were abducted by aliens or joined a roving band of street performers." Phil says.
Alex breathes out a sigh of relief. "Sorry. We lost track of time. I promise it won't happen again."
"Hey. You're young, you're supposed to lose track of time every once in a while. Just be smart. And don't tell your mom I let you slide this time. I've got a reputation to maintain." Phil sets down his cereal, eyes twinkling.
Alex's lips curve into a grateful, slightly sheepish smile. "Deal. Thanks, Dad."
Phil gives her a mock-serious two-finger salute. "Now go sneak up to your room like a rebellious teen. I'll pretend I didn't see a thing."
Meanwhile, Jake waits in the shadow by the bushes, watching as Alex mouths 'five minutes' through the window before vanishing upstairs.
He shakes his head, chuckling under his breath.
Alex tiptoes back downstairs, socks silent on the wood. She pokes her head into the living room, where Phil is now watching some vintage sci-fi movie, still completely engrossed.
Haley is now sprawled on the other side of the couch, phone in hand. She catches Alex's desperate look and arches an eyebrow. Alex mouths help me and jerks her head toward the door.
"Dad, I was thinking should we maybe look at some old photo albums tonight? You know, from when you and Mom were dating. Super cute stuff." Haley smirks, then suddenly sits up.
"Really? Wow, Haley, that's actually incredibly sweet. Sure, let me go grab them from the closet-" Phil turns, delighted. He hops up. Haley shoots Alex a smug wink.
Jake slips inside, carefully shutting it behind him. His eyes dart to Phil, who's rummaging in the hall closet now, completely oblivious. Haley intercepts Phil with a squeal. "Oh my god, look how young you look in this one!" She points at a random framed photo, blocking his view of Jake.
Alex grabs Jake's hand, hissing, "Come on!"
They sneak past the couch, nearly holding their breath. At one point, Jake accidentally knocks into a side table, making a faint clink of glass. Alex's heart stops but Phil just chuckles at whatever Haley's saying about his haircut.
Haley throws Alex one last triumphant grin as they disappear up the stairs.
They slip into the hallway, Alex's heart racing. Jake's hand finds her lower back, warm and reassuring. Finally in her bedroom, she closes the door with exaggerated slowness.
"Okay. Operation: Hide My Boyfriend is a success." She says and lets out a laugh.
Jake sweeps her up against him, pressing a playful kiss to her cheek. "So what's my reward for risking life, limb, and permanent embarrassment for you?"
Alex just rolls her eyes, loops her arms around his neck and kisses him properly, until they're both smiling against each other's mouths.
"Shut up and get in my bed."
