Haley wakes up, her head against Jake chest and her legs entwined with his, naked and feeling sore but satisfied. She stretches, feeling Jake stirring up.
"Best morning ever!" Haley says enthusiastically, crashing her lips against Jake, her tongue slipping in her curling around his as she feels up his muscle, her hand going south.
"Night's over Haley.." Jake answers, separating himself from her but cupping a feel of her buttom.
"I know.. I know.." Haley retorts, pouting then standing up.
[ Later that morning ]
Jake pulls the car up to the Dunphy house, engine idling as the soft hum fills the air. Haley sits in the passenger seat, sunglasses on, hair tied up in a loose bun, and a smile still lingering on her lips. There's an ease between them, a kind of quiet understanding that didn't exist before.
Jake glances at her as he shifts the car into park.
"You good?" He asks, voice casual.
Haley smirks. "I'm great. Better than I've been in a while, honestly." She turns slightly to face him.
"You're really not a terrible way to spend a night."
Jake laughs under his breath, shaking his head. "Glad to be of service. Just let's not make it weird."
"Weird?" Haley echoes, feigning offense. "I don't do weird. I do charming, inappropriate, and unforgettable."
He raises an eyebrow. "You forgot relentless."
"That too." She agrees, shrugging playfully. She hesitates for half a second. "But for what it's worth... thanks. I needed that. And no drama, I promise."
Jake nods, his expression softening. "I trust you." He glances toward the house. "So does Alex, you know."
Haley lets out a small breath, quieter now. "Yeah. And I won't mess that up."
There's a pause. Then, with her usual swagger, Haley opens the door. "Alright, I'm off to pretend I was up all night stress-watching baking shows with friends."
Jake chuckles. "Convincing."
As she steps out, she leans back in and says lightly, "Tell Alex she's lucky. And yeah, maybe so am I." She smiles at him, a strange smile, tender and honest.
Jake watches her go, then drives off, his face unreadable but thoughtful.
[ Some minutes later ]
Haley and Alex are in the kitchen. Alex is at the counter, sipping tea and flipping through her notes when Haley strolls in with a cheery, innocent tone. "Morning, studious one."
Alex raises an eyebrow but smirks. "You look... refreshed."
"I am. That green smoothie I didn't drink and the yoga class I didn't take really energized me," Haley says with a wink.
Alex rolls her eyes but there's no edge. "You okay?"
Haley nods genuinely. "Yeah. Really. And don't worry things aren't weird. Promise." She pauses. "Jake was great. So damn great. Like I said, you've got a good one." She adds.
Alex smiles faintly and bumps her shoulder. "I know."
They share a quiet moment. No tension. No lingering awkwardness. Just sisters in sync for now.
"Just wanted to say thanks. Really." Haley picks at her sleeve. "You didn't have to be okay with it. Most girls wouldn't have been."
Alex exhales slowly, leaning back on her hands. "I'm not 'most girls.' I'm your sister. And I know you. I know when you're just being flirty, and when you're... lonely."
Haley's eyes flicker. "Yeah. Lately, it's been more the second one." She tries to laugh it off. "I mean, I joke a lot, but it's been a weird year. Watching everyone move forward. Feeling kind of... stuck."
Alex softens. "I get that." She pauses. "And yeah, I hated the idea at first. I was possessive and nervous and a little grossed out, if I'm honest."
"That tracks."Haley says, smirking.
"But then I remembered all the times you were there for me when I didn't even realize I needed someone. If it helped, if it made you feel wanted then I can live with that." She gives her a half-smile.
Haley nods, surprisingly emotional. "I needed to feel chosen. Even for a night."
Alex's voice is quiet but firm. "You are. Chosen, loved, wanted. Just not by Jake."
"Right," Haley says, wiping the corner of her eye with a sheepish grin. "Back to daydreaming about emotionally unavailable photographers and influencers who don't know I exist."
Alex laughs. "That's the Haley I know."
"Alright, nerd. I'll leave you to your flashcards and existential dread." She heads to the door, then glances back. "You really are the best sister."
"I know." Alex says without missing a beat.
[ Later That Day ]
[ Starbucks ]
She doesn't speak at first just watches him, her gaze soft but unreadable. Jake notices and pauses his typing.
Jake glances up. "Okay. That look is either a philosophical breakthrough or a bomb waiting to drop."
"Neither. Maybe both." Alex smiles faintly.
Jake raises an eyebrow but waits, giving her the space to form whatever thought is twisting behind her eyes.
"You and Haley. Last night." Alex says slowly.
Jake exhales through his nose. "You said it was okay."
"It was," She says, surprisingly calm. "It is."
She fidgets. "I just didn't expect to feel... this okay. Maybe I thought I'd be jealous or weirded out. But I'm not. I know what we have. And I trust you. And her."
Jake watches her closely, his tone gentle. "That trust means everything, babe."
She gives a short, quiet laugh. "I mean, don't expect me to start lending you out like a library book. Haley's Haley. This was... a one-time act of sisterly love or insanity."
He chuckles, his hand finding hers. "It didn't change anything for me. You're still mine."
Alex leans her head on his shoulder, taking a slow breath. "Good. Just promise me something?"
"Anything."
"Don't fall for her." A beat. "She's great. But I fought hard for you. You're mine."
Jake squeezes her hand. "You don't have to worry. I fell for you a long time ago."
[ Four Months Later ]
The final stretch of high school feels like a strange blur half adrenaline, half nostalgia.
Alex is still full-on academic beast mode. But there's a shift in her now. The pressure's still there, sure, but for once, she's not being crushed by it. There's support. Laughter. Balance.
Jake's often nearby, either quietly coding beside her or quizzing her on bio formulas while he snacks. He's already wrapped up his consulting gig with Pritchett's Closets, delivering a final prototype that got Jay nodding with the rare "That kid's the real deal."
Jake took his payment in shares and walked out with a handshake and a smirk, proud and ambitious as ever.
Meanwhile, Haley's blog has started gaining traction. Filled with chaotic charm, outfit inspo, and the occasional deep thought disguised as sarcasm. She and Alex are closer than ever. Their bond is less about rivalry now, more like an alliance built on late-night confessions, mutual respect, and one big shared secret they rarely talk about but silently understand.
[ Dunphy's house ]
Alex is curled on the couch, textbook open, highlighter in hand. Haley walks in and flops down beside her, eating from a bag of chips.
"If you don't ace these finals, Mom's demanding a refund from the school system."
"It's not about acing. It's about obliterating." Alex answers, snatching a chips.
"Same energy I bring to contouring, respect." Haley says playfully. Alex rolls her eyes but leans into her sister.
"You're ready for this, you know. College, Jake, life. You're different now. Not in a bad way."
Alex softens. "So are you. I'm really proud of you Haley, you're blog really starting to buzz."
"Stop. I'll cry and ruin my eyeliner." Haley grins, mock-sniffling.
[ Later that evening ]
[ Jake's studio ]
Jake is running a final test on the Pritchett app, making sure the closet outfit suggestions don't try to match cowboy boots with cargo shorts again. Alex is lying on his bed, arms folded behind her head, watching him.
"So... Pritchett's closet done. What now? You gonna take over Silicon Valley?"
"Give me three years. Two if Stanford's WiFi is decent." Jake says jokingly.
"We're really doing this, huh?"
"Yup. You, me, same campus. Same city. Same apartment. New chapter."
She smiles, wide and real.
"It's terrifying. And kind of amazing." Alex says, playing with his hair.
"Terrifying things are usually worth it."
She kisses him softly. It's soft, like a promise.
[A few weeks later ]
Today's the day the final exam results are released, Alex is pacing in her room, biting her thumb nail. Her laptop screen glows on the bed, open to the student portal. Jake lounges beside her, far calmer, arms behind his head.
"Just click it," Jake says. "You're gonna give yourself a heart attack."
"I can't, If it's bad, I'll-" She mutters, her voice cracks a little.
Jake leans over and taps the enter key.
Alex yelps. "Jake!"
But then the results appear. A long, weighted pause. Her eyes scan the screen.
"I did it." She whispers. Then louder, "I did it!"
"Top five percent!" Alex practically shouts. "All A's! I-Oh my god!"
Jake laughs and pulls her into a tight hug, lifting her off the bed.
"You're amazing." He says.
She grins against his shoulder. "What about you?"
He reaches for his phone. "Hold on. Let's see if I'm worthy of MIT's most feared academic overlord."
Thirty seconds pass, then he exhales. "Boom. Passed everything. Honors in Math and Physics."
Alex beams. "Told you. We're unstoppable."
[ Two weeks later ]
A week later, they're sitting across from Claire and Phil at the kitchen table. Two acceptance letters lie in front of them both stamped MIT in bold, proud letters.
"We're really doing this." Alex says quietly.
Claire blinks fast, trying not to cry. "My baby... at MIT."
Phil reaches out and high-fives Jake. "My son-in-law, future billionaire tech mogul, taking my daughter to Boston!"
Jake laughs. "One step at a time, Phil."
[ In the afternoon ]
Jake and Alex walk hand in hand through a quiet street downtown, talking plans.
"I've been looking at apartments," Jake says. "Close to campus, nothing crazy. One bedroom, big windows, space for a desk with a an equipped kitchen."
Alex smiles. "We're really going to live together."
"You okay with that?" He asks squeezing her hand.
"I wouldn't want to live with anyone else," she says simply.
Jake pauses. "It won't always be easy. We'll be busy. You'll be stressed. I might be coding through the night."
Alex smiles at him, intertwining her fingers with his. "I've been stressed my whole life, Jake. But not like this. With you? It's better."
[ Later that evening ]
The news settles over the Dunphy household like a gentle fog. Not sad. Not happy. Just new. A change that's been coming.
They're all in the living room that evening. Alex sits with Jake, their fingers interlaced. Claire and Phil are on the couch opposite them, sipping wine. Haley leans against the wall, arms crossed, eyes unreadable.
"So when do you leave?" Claire asks, voice trying to stay steady.
"End of August." Alex replies. "Orientation starts early September."
Phil's eyes go misty. "So soon. I still remember when you were obsessed with your telescope and used to tell me Pluto mattered."
"It still does." Alex says automatically.
Claire smiles faintly. "MIT. You two are going to do great things."
"Thanks, Mom." Alex says.
Then all eyes turn to Haley.
She exhales slowly and walks toward them, plopping down beside Alex on the arm of the chair. Her tone is light, but her eyes are glassy.
"Well... you're going to leave me with Luke. And Mom. And Dad's constant drone impressions."
"You'll survive." Alex teases.
Haley snorts. "Barely."
Then she looks at Jake. "And you."
Jake raises an eyebrow. "Me?"
Haley nods, the humor dropping from her face. "Yeah. You're leaving too."
There's a small pause. Jake sits up a little straighter. "Haley, we're not vanishing. We'll visit and you ca-"
"I know." She waves him off. "It's stupid. I'm just gonna miss you, okay? Both of you."
Alex watches her sister, something softening in her. She reaches up and touches Haley's hand.
"I'm gonna miss you too."
"And who's gonna help me with dumb girl things and heartbreaks now?" Haley mutters. "Or tell me I'm not a total screw-up every time I mess up something?"
Alex squeezes her hand. "You're not a screw-up. And there's FaceTime. And texts."
Haley swipes under her eyes quickly. "Ugh."
Phil tries to lighten the mood. "Don't worry, Hales. You've still got me. And Luke! And your mom's closet empire."
Claire glares. "Thanks, Phil."
Haley gives a half-laugh. "Yeah, yeah. It won't be the same, that's all."
She leans her head gently on Alex's shoulder for a moment a rare gesture that says more than anything else.
Alex leans back against her. "We'll be okay."
[ Evening ]
Jake, Alex, and Haley arrive at the beach just as the sun begins to dip below the horizon. The air is warm, scented with salt and the faint smoke of a bonfire nearby. Music thumps from a cluster of speakers set up on the sand, and laughter drifts over the crowd gathered for the party.
Alex breathes in deeply, a smile tugging at her lips. "This is exactly what we needed."
"Yeah, no leaving me plans for a night." Haley bumps her shoulder playfully.
Jake grins, looping his arms around both of them. "Ready to show these beach party pros how it's done?"
The music swells, and the three of them lose themselves in the rhythm, carefree and connected under the stars.
The night hums with bass and sea breeze, the beach glowing beneath strings of amber lights swaying gently in the wind.
Music pulses from speakers nestled in the sand, and the party sways with heat, laughter, and movement. Jake steps toward the heart of it, drink in hand, the firelight flickering across his skin.
Haley is the first to move in, hips rolling in time with the beat, her sundress catching the breeze and clinging just enough. She doesn't say a word just slides her hand down Jake's arm with a slow, teasing touch, then spins away into the crowd, casting a look over her shoulder that dares him and Alex to follow.
Alex appears moments later, steps smooth, confident, eyes locked on his. She slides up to him without hesitation, her voice low, sultry. "You wanna dance with us?" She asks, lips near his ear, breath warm enough to raise goosebumps.
Jake starts to reply, but Haley is suddenly behind him again, her body pressing close, swaying with him, her hands sliding along his sides. Alex moves in tandem, circling from the front. The three of them fall into the music, their bodies finding a sensual rhythm, close and deliberate. Jake is caught in the middle, hands instinctively finding hips, Haley's first, then Alex's as they trap him between them. It's not innocent. Not even close.
Alex leans in, brushing her lips along his jawline, just barely there, just enough to make his breath hitch. Haley lowers herself in front of him, rolling her hips, her touch feather-light but grounding. The way they move in sync, it's clear they're doing this together. A game.
The beat slows, deepens, and they match it slower now, more intense. Alex slides a hand under Jake's shirt, fingers dragging lightly across his stomach, while Haley presses against his back, her hands anchoring him as she grinds slow and steady.
Jake's chest rises, the ocean air thick with salt and heat. He doesn't fight it. He dances with them, losing himself in the rhythm, in the way Alex and Haley move around him.
[ A month later ]
They're lounging on the Dunphys' back porch, a rare quiet moment between the whirlwind of preparation and looming goodbyes. Alex is curled up beside Jake on the swing bench, nose buried in his neck, whispering naughty things in his ear. Jake, has one arm lazily slung around her shoulders. Haley walks out holding two iced coffees and a smoothie.
"Okay, you bitches," Haley says, handing over the drinks, "I've got a pitch."
Alex glances up. "It's probably not relevant."
"It's relevant. Life relevant." Haley sits on the railing dramatically.
Jake takes a sip of his drink, eyeing her with amusement. "Let's hear it."
Haley grins. "I've been thinking.. what if I move with you guys?"
Alex blinks. "To Boston?"
"Yeah." Haley leans forward, eyes sparkling. "Think about it my blog's finally making money, I can afford a third of the rent, and with three of us, you could actually get a nice apartment. Not a shoebox."
Jake raises a brow. "You serious?"
"Dead serious." Haley nods. "I love Mom and Dad and ugh.. Luke, but I need out. I want to start my own thing, explore a new city, maybe even take a few online classes part-time. And let's be honest, you two could use someone around who knows how to pick out curtains and do cocktails."
Alex looks at her for a beat, expression unreadable.
"You wouldn't feel like... I don't know. A third wheel?" she asks.
Haley shrugs. "Please. You guys are cute, not clingy. And it's not like I'll be hovering. I've got my own stuff to do. I just-" she trails off for a moment before adding softly, "I don't want to be left behind. And I'd miss you. Both of you."
Alex's features soften. Jake sits up a little.
"Actually," Jake says, "it could work."
Alex finally nods, slow and thoughtful. "It would be nice to have you around."
Haley lights up. "So that's a yes?"
"It's a maybe," Alex says, smirking. "Contingent on you doing your share of chores and not using my shampoo."
"No promises," Haley teases. "But I will stock the fridge with rhum and cheese puffs."
Jake holds out his hand. "Deal."
Haley slaps it, grinning. "This is going to be fun."
[ Two weeks later ]
The trio is in Boston for a quick scouting weekend and it's turning out to be more chaotic than expected.
"I'm not living in a place where I can hear rats breathing." Alex says firmly, arms crossed as they step out of a sketchy walk-up.
Jake squints up at the cracked facade. "Okay, yeah. That one was rough."
Haley is already scrolling through listings on her phone. "No offense, but your price range without me is giving haunted asylum."
"We get it," Alex mutters. "You're the MVP of real estate."
Haley smirks. "I know I am. Okay, next one's in Cambridge. Walkable to MIT, two bedrooms, one and a half bath, and exposed brick. Also, the photos show a working espresso machine, so obviously destiny."
Jake brightens. "Let's check it out."
Twenty minutes later, they step into a sunny, third-floor unit with big windows, hardwood floors, and, yes, exposed brick. Jake walks straight to the living room and stretches out his arms.
"Okay, this feels like a space where I can code all night and not go insane."
Alex peers into the tiny but well-organized kitchen. "This place is clean. Like, actually clean."
Haley opens a closet and grins. "Guys. It has storage. Storage. We can put shoes in it and then forget about them only to rediscover them."
Jake pokes his head into the bathroom. "Decent water pressure!"
Alex leans against the doorframe, raising an eyebrow. "Are we seriously getting excited about water pressure now?"
Jake grins. "Real life problems, babe."
They reconvene in the middle of the living room.
"So?" Haley says. "Should we apply?"
Alex hesitates. "We haven't seen the last place on the list."
Jake shrugs. "Do you want to?"
She glances around at the sunlight streaming across the floor, the big corner windows, and the small built-in bookshelf that's already giving her ideas.
"Nope," Alex says. "I want this one."
Haley squeals. "Yes! Let's snag it before some hipster with a record collection grabs it."
Jake pulls out his phone. "I'm texting the agent now."
They all look at each other, a weird mix of nerves and excitement in the air.
"We're really doing this." Alex says quietly.
Haley grins. "Three roommates. One city. No adult supervision."
Jake slings an arm around Alex's waist. "What could possibly go wrong?"
[ Later that week ]
Claire is at the kitchen island slicing vegetables, while Phil is fiddling with the smart fridge
"It locked me out again! The fridge doesn't trust me!"
Alex, Jake, and Haley walk in together, a little nervous but excited.
Alex clears her throat.
"We wanted to talk to you both." She says.
Phil turns around, chipper. "Oh boy, that's never how a fun sentence starts."
Claire raises an eyebrow. "What is it?"
Haley steps forward first, unusually serious. "Okay, so... we've been looking at places in Boston. And we found one. A really good one."
Claire's knife pauses mid-chop. "Wait- we?"
Jake smiles, hands tucked in his back pockets. "Yeah. Alex, Haley and me. We're thinking of moving in together. Splitting the rent three ways."
Phil blinks. "Like a... sitcom?"
Haley smirks. "Except with more laundry."
Alex quickly steps in. "It makes sense. MIT is crazy expensive, housing near campus is ridiculous, and Haley's blog is actually making money now. With all three of us, we can afford a decent place."
Claire folds her arms. "And you're sure this is a good idea? You're about to start one of the most intense programs in the country, Alex."
"I know," Alex says. "But this actually helps. I'll be in a stable, supportive environment. With people I trust. And we already survived living under the same roof for years."
Phil frowns thoughtfully. "So... you're all adults. You've thought this through. This isn't one of those 'Haley bought an hermès bag' type plans?"
"I learned from that!" Haley says.
Claire exhales slowly, then turns to Jake. "And you're on board?"
"I am." Jake says. "This isn't just about saving money. I want to be there for Alex while she takes this step. And Haley's earned her freedom too."
Phil looks at each of them, finally nodding with a small smile. "Well... I guess we're going to need to stock up on moving boxes."
"And bubble wrap. So much bubble wrap." Haley grins.
Claire walks over and pulls Alex into a hug, then Haley.
"I'm proud of you girls. Just promise me you'll call. Often."
"We will." Alex whispers.
Phil hugs Jake awkwardly but sincerely. "Take care of them, alright?"
Jake nods. "Always."
[ Another month later ]
The apartment is bigger than they remembers two bedrooms, a spacious common area, and even a tiny balcony that overlooks a tree-lined street just a few blocks from the MIT campus. The price tag would've been impossible for just Jake and Alex, but now that Haley's blog has taken off, she's pitched in enough to make the upgraded place a reality.
"This is it." Haley says, twirling around the empty living room in excitement, her voice echoing. "I'm officially no longer living with Mom and Dad. I feel like a grown-up.. who still eats cereal for dinner."
Jake chuckles as he sets a box down. "You sure you're ready for college-town chaos?"
"I survived living with Claire Dunphy," Haley says, planting her hands on her hips. "I can handle two overachievers."
Alex appears from the hallway with a roll of drawer liners and a skeptical eyebrow. "Correction: one overachiever. Jake's a slacker genius who writes code at 2am and forgets to eat."
Jake grins. "Guilty."
Haley mock gasps. "Is that why you're so shredded? Babe, you need snacks."
Alex gives her a look. "Don't call him babe."
Haley winks. "Relax. Roomie teasing privileges."
The mood is warm, comfortable the three of them falling into this new chapter with an unexpected ease. The chaos of final exams is behind them, the uncertainty of college in front, and now, the three are navigating something completely new.
Jake flops onto the couch, arms stretched out. "Okay. We have an apartment, utilities are set, internet gets activated tomorrow. What's left?"
Haley tosses a pillow at him. "Grocery run. This place has zero food."
Alex grins. "Then let's go. Haley's paying she's the influencer."
Haley groans. "I didn't realize being roommate came with taxes."
