The Rogue Throne

The screen went dark the moment Kairo clicked the link.

For three seconds, he was suspended in digital silence—no sound, no system notifications, no light except a slowly spiraling glyph.

Then:

[WELCOME TO THE UNDERNET GATEWAY][Tamer Identity: Hidden][Registry Masking: Active][Proxy Seal: KERNEL_BREAKER VERIFIED]

"Master," Mote whispered, "we are now beyond system jurisdiction. Proceed with caution."

The interface rippled like oil. A voice—not code-synthesized, but human—came through.

"You brought a Throne online. Either you're suicidal… or chosen."

A figure materialized: a shadowed avatar, draped in code-fragments and glitches, face permanently obscured by a shifting firewall mask.

"I'm called Zeroer. Former Tamer. Exiled. And bonded once… to the Third Throne."

Kairo's breath caught. "Which element?"

"Oblivion."

"That's not an element."

"Exactly," Zeroer said. "That's why they erased me."

Zeroer waved a hand and data flared around them—fragments of corrupted logs, purged battle footage, and video files so damaged they bled static.

"You've bonded to the First. The Data Throne. The Seed of Restoration. That thing—your little mote—isn't a pet. It's the Root Protocol."

Kairo's mind raced. "Then why does it seem… normal? Small?"

"Because the Thrones grow with awareness. With memory. Every skill it learns, every command you give, feeds the original will beneath the code. You're not raising a beast."

"You're waking a god."

Kairo stood silently, then said, "What happened to your Throne?"

Zeroer paused.

"I rejected it."

"Why?"

"Because Oblivion doesn't stop. It consumed every other pet I had. Every code. Even my bondmark.""The system tried to erase me after I refused to finish the ascension. Said I was unstable.""They weren't wrong."

He looked straight at Kairo—even through the firewall, Kairo could feel the weight behind that gaze.

"You're heading there, whether you want to or not. You woke one. The others will answer soon.""The Second's already pulsing. You feel the storm, don't you?"

"Yes," Kairo said quietly.

Lightning had been humming in the back of his head for hours. Crackling dreams. Pressure behind his eyes.

"When the Second awakens," Zeroer said, "you'll draw attention."

"From who?"

"Not just tamers. Not just guilds.""The System itself."

The Undernet cracked around them.

A new alert screamed into Kairo's feed:

[System Trace Initiated — Source: CLASSIFIED AI NODE / Protocol: REDTHREAD][Warning: You are being watched.]

Zeroer cursed. "Too soon. They traced your ping signature."

"Can you sever it?"

"Only if you run now. I'll send a splinter echo to throw them off.""Next time, come with your storm unsealed. Or don't come at all."

Before Kairo could respond, the Undernet interface dissolved.

Back in the academy's netroom, Kairo gasped—jolting upright. Sweat poured down his neck.

Mote hovered beside him, blinking red.

"We were tracked. But the echo fragment held. Barely."

"What's Redthread?"

"A system-level protocol designed to erase illegal pets, corrupt signatures, and force-kill tamers marked 'Unstable'."

"It's used against those who awaken Thrones."

Kairo stared at his reflection in the dark glass of the netroom.

For the first time… he felt it.

Something deep in his core.

Like thunder, waiting to crack open the sky.

And just beneath it, glowing faintly:
