Somewhere on a high ridge of white sand, five figures stood in the eternal night of Hueco Mundo.
Tall, sharp-masked, predatory — their forms radiated menace.
Five Adjuchas.
Shawlong Koufang, their leader, crossed his arms as he stared down at the massive Gillian below.
That Gillian — me — was currently in the middle of an impressive feat:
Trying to juggle rocks with giant, clumsy hands.
Failing, of course.
One rock fell on my head.
I stumbled and faceplanted into the sand.
A bright, ridiculous moment in an endless world of death and silence.
"...He did it again," Edrad Liones muttered, rubbing his jaw.
"I swear, that Gillian's an idiot. How the hell is it still alive?"
Yylfordt Granz snorted, mask gleaming.
"More like… famous idiot. I've heard rumors about it. That one's been wandering around doing dumb stuff for years. Never dies. Some say it can't be killed. Others say it's cursed."
Nakeem Grindina crossed his massive arms, tail flicking.
"I don't get it."
He looked at Shawlong.
"Boss. Is it true what they say? That idiot's gonna evolve? That… thing could become an Adjuchas?"
The others stared at Shawlong.
The leader's sharp gaze didn't leave me, even as I belly-flopped into a poorly made sand pit.
For a long moment, Shawlong was silent.
Then he sighed.
"It's a rumor," he said coolly.
"But a persistent one. Word is… somehow, that Gillian's survived longer than most. Never eaten a single Hollow. Never fought for survival. And yet, it grows."
Edrad scoffed.
"You believe that crap?"
"I believe what I see," Shawlong replied, eyes narrowing.
"And what I see… is a Gillian with enough spiritual pressure to make other Menos avoid it. Look around. You see any other Hollows attacking him?"
The four looked.
The vast sands were empty.
Even lesser Hollows gave my flailing figure a wide berth.
Yylfordt frowned.
"You thinking what I'm thinking?"
"If it evolves…" Nakeem added.
"We'd want it on our side," Shawlong finished, a dangerous glint in his eye.
"But it's an idiot," Edrad argued.
"Doesn't matter. Power's power. And if something like that evolves, no one in Hueco Mundo's gonna laugh anymore."
Shawlong smirked.
"I'll keep an eye on him."
The group fell silent again.
Down below, I triumphantly stuck a broken tree branch into the sand and cheered.

I waved at them.
The Adjuchas didn't wave back.
