Chapter 57: An Echo from the Past and Divided Loyalties

After the reviving energy of the subterranean echo point and the terrifying visions of the Lords of the Void's impending invasion, the faint but persistent cry for help that had fallen into Kael's mind had upset all balance. Roric… The man who had once been part of the Echo, the man he had thought lost in the midst of betrayal and survival, was now reaching out to him from somewhere, desperately. For Kael, this was not just a cry for help, but also a confrontation with his past, the decisions he had made, and the complicated world he had left behind.

"Roric?" Aslan whispered, seeing the shock and inner conflict on Kael's face. "Is he… alive?"

"It seems so," Kael said, still able to feel the faint "echo" coming from the Chitauri core. "And he's in trouble. In big trouble." Although the Core could not pinpoint Roric's location, it was receiving a faint signal of life and intense fear from one of New York's old, abandoned industrial districts.

Commander Maria Hill had noticed the sudden change in Kael. "What is it, Echo? A new vision?"

Kael hesitated for a moment. Telling Hill about Roric could strain an already fragile alliance. To S.H.I.E.L.D., Roric was just another criminal in Kael's past, an unimportant detail in the face of an impending cosmic invasion. But to Kael, Roric meant something different. A mistake, a regret, perhaps, but also part of his own "Echo."

"I picked up a signal from an old… contact," Kael said, choosing his words carefully. "He seems to need help."

Hill's brow furrowed. "An old contact? We don't have time for personal matters right now, Echo. The Void Lords' invasion fleet is approaching. We must focus all our resources and attention on it."

"I understand, Commander," Kael said. "But this 'contact' may have vital information about Fisk's remaining operations or the Void leaks beneath the city. Leaving him there would be potentially giving the enemy leverage." This was true in part, but Kael's real motivation was the complicated sense of responsibility he felt toward Roric.

Hill saw the determination in Kael's eyes. This man, as dangerous and unpredictable as he was, seemed to have a certain code of honor. "Very well," Hill said with a sigh. "Tell me where this 'contact' is and how long it will last. We can support you with a limited reconnaissance team. But the slightest deviation or delay will abort the operation and bring you back here. Is that clear?"

This was a better offer than Kael could have hoped for. "Understood, Commander."

Guided by the Chitauri core, Kael, Aslan, and a small, elite S.H.I.E.L.D. team chosen by Commander Hill, set out for the abandoned industrial zone from which Roric's faint signal had come. The area was filled with the ghosts of once-lively factories and warehouses; now, it was a place forgotten by the city, where vigilantes and shadows roamed.

As they got closer to the source of the signal, Kael sensed that the Chitauri core was detecting another, more sinister energy, as well as Roric's echo. This was a faint but distinct Void energy. Roric was not just in ordinary trouble; he might have somehow come into contact with the darkness of the Void.

Finally, they reached a dilapidated warehouse. The interior was dark and silent. Kael and Aslan followed as the S.H.I.E.L.D. team tactically infiltrated the area. In the center of the warehouse, they found Roric. But he was in much worse shape than they had expected.

Roric was chained to a wall, his body covered in bruises and cuts. But worst of all, there was that familiar fear in his eyes, as well as the icy, inhuman touch of the Void. Around him were several figures that looked like Fisk's former henchmen, but far more savage and uncontrolled. These men were not only out for revenge; they too had been poisoned by the whispers of the Void, and had lost their minds. And they seemed to be preparing Roric for some kind of dark ritual.

"So you have finally come, Echo," hissed one of them, the figure who had tortured Roric. "Roric has told us everything. Your little secrets, your glowing stone… Our masters are eager to meet you."

Kael was filled with rage at the scene. This meant not only rescuing Roric, but also cleaning up another Void leak on this planet. S.H.I.E.L.D. As the team moved into position, Kael and Aslan moved to put an end to this madness.

But just then, Kael's Chitauri core vibrated with a warning as intense as it had ever been before. A much larger, more organized Void energy signature was projected into his mind from beneath this warehouse where Roric was. This was not just a few possessed outcasts. This was a secret center of operations for the Void Lords on Earth, perhaps a staging post for invasion. Without realizing it, Roric had lured them into a much larger trap.
