Chapter 59: Whispering from the Ashes and a New Threat
Following the devastating explosion of the Void Base, Kael found himself in a S.H.I.E.L.D. infirmary, surrounded by sterile white walls. His body was deeply worn down by the recent battles and the energy drained from the Chitauri Core. The Core now lay in his palm like a cold, lifeless piece of metal; its ancient light and whispers had faded. As an Echo Carrier, his senses had diminished, and he had difficulty sensing the Void's eerie presence. This was both a physical and spiritual nudity for Kael.
Aslan had not left his bedside. Commander Maria Hill waited for Kael to wake up. Her face bore the marks of exhaustion and loss from the previous operation, but also a newfound respect and curiosity for Kael. The "fugitive" had sacrificed his own life and the powerful artifact in his possession, saving not just a S.H.I.E.L.D. team but perhaps the entire city.
Roric, however, was still unconscious. The torture he had endured and the Void's attacks on his mind had left him in a deep coma. But S.H.I.E.L.D. doctors said his vitals were stable. Kael could not get Roric's last whisper—"Fisk Tower... was merely bait... The real target... is somewhere else..."—out of his mind. What did it mean?
When Kael came to, Commander Hill came to him immediately. "You need to rest, Echo," he said, his voice more human this time. "But there are things I need to know. Roric's last words... What did he mean?"
Kael straightened slowly. "I don't know, Commander," he said honestly. "But the Lords of the Void's plans are far more complex than we thought. That parasite in Fisk Tower and the underground base may just be a distraction."
This thought worried Commander Hill as well. S.H.I.E.L.D. had focused all of its resources on these two main threats in New York. If the real target was somewhere else, they could be caught off guard.
The days passed as Kael's slow recovery progressed and S.H.I.E.L.D. tried everything to revive the Chitauri core, but it was unresponsive. It seemed that he had lost most of his powers as an Echo Carrier. This left him both vulnerable and hopeless in his fight against the Lords of the Void.
One night, however, Kael dreamed of the bright light of the echo points, the whispers of the Infinite Library, and the purifying energy of the Heart of Life. When he woke up, he noticed that the Chitauri core in his palm was slightly warm and that there was a vibration, though very faint, inside it. The core was not completely dead; it was simply in a deep sleep and needed an "echo," a spark, to reawaken. Perhaps the Echo within Kael himself could revive him.
At that moment, the door to the infirmary opened and a hurried S.H.I.E.L.D. agent entered. "Commander Hill! Roric... Roric is awake!"
They hurried to Roric's room. Roric lay exhausted on the bed, but his eyes were open. When he saw Kael, a pained expression crossed his face. "Kael... Did you succeed? Did you destroy that... that base?"
"Yes, Roric," Kael said. "But we need your help now. Those last words... Where is the real target?"
Roric took a deep breath. His speech was labored. "The Void... The servants of the Void... They... they were searching for something. Something ancient... hidden in the Earth's core... the Creators'... final legacy..." Roric's voice trailed off, his eyes closing again. "Its name... it's called the 'Crystal of Terra'... If they could get their hands on it... they could turn Earth... Earth into a Void portal..."
This information came as a shock to Kael and Commander Hill. So the Lords of the Void's true goal was not to seize a single city or an echo point, but to use the entire planet for their own dark purposes. The Crystal of Terra... This was something they had never heard of before.
Commander Hill immediately put S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top science and research units on alert. Was there any information, any legends, or records about the Crystal of Terra? This was a race against time.
Kael felt a surge of hope, and also a surge of fear, at Roric's final whisper. The Chitauri core had vibrated even more powerfully in his palm when he heard the words "Crystal of Terra." It was as if the name had resonated with the core's ancient memory. Perhaps this crystal was the spark that would revive the core. But if the Lords of the Void were to claim it, all would be lost.
"Commander," Kael said, his eyes on the bed where Roric lay, his voice firm. "We must find that crystal. Before the Lords of the Void do."
This was the beginning of a new adventure, a new danger, and perhaps Earth's last hope. Once again, the Echo Carrier was forced to face the call of his destiny.
