Chapter 61: Descent into the Heart of the Earth and the Boiling Depths

After days of intense work, a massive drilling and reconnaissance vehicle, dubbed "Talpa" by S.H.I.E.L.D., was ready for duty. It was a project once dreamed up by Howard Stark and Anton Vanko, but never completed; now, it was a subterranean battleship, capable of reaching the deepest layers of the planet, enhanced with modern technology and some principles derived from Kael's Chitauri core. Commander Maria Hill had assembled a team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents for this dangerous mission: Talpa's experienced pilot and chief engineer, a geologist, and several special operations soldiers. Kael and Aslan were the team's "expert advisors" and their greatest hopes. Roric, still not fully recovered, remained at a S.H.I.E.L.D. base on the surface for possible intelligence and communications support.

As Talpa's massive augers began to turn, the ground trembled in a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. facility in the middle of the Nevada desert. The craft slowly but surely began its journey through the earth's crust, reaching into the unknown depths. Inside, the atmosphere was tense. Kael, eyes closed, the Chitauri core in his palm, listened to the faint but persistent "echo" of the Terra Crystal. The core was being fed by Earth's own geothermal energy during this journey, slowly regaining its former strength. This also sharpened Kael's senses as an Echo Carrier.

The first few kilometers were relatively easy for Talpa's advanced drilling systems. However, as the depth increased, the heat and pressure began to rise to unbearable levels. Talpa's outer armor was red-hot, and the cooling systems inside were working at full speed. The geologist was constantly analyzing seismic activity and rock structure, while the pilot skillfully maneuvered through unexpected magma pockets and layers of ultra-hard rock. The lion tried to remain calm even in this claustrophobic environment, not leaving Kael's side.

"How much further, Echo?" Commander Hill asked, his voice reaching Kael over the radio. Despite being in different parts of Talpa, their communication was uninterrupted.

"We're getting closer, Commander," Kael said without opening his eyes. "But something... something is wrong. I sense the echo of the Void. They're here too."

Kael's warning was not long in coming. As Talpa reached a vast underground cavern, sensors detected anomalous energy readings and unidentifiable movements. Enormous, wormlike creatures possessed by the Void and crystallized, sharp-clawed shadow beings began to burst from the cavern's walls. The Lords of the Void had also contaminated this path to the Crystal of Terra, setting up their own nightmarish guards.

Talpa's external weapons systems came online. Lasers and sonic blasters began firing against these subterranean nightmares. Inside, S.H.I.E.L.D. soldiers had taken up positions against any possible infiltration attempts. This was not just a reconnaissance mission, but also a fight for survival.

Kael was using the power he drew from the Chitauri core to support Talpa's energy shields, while also mentally detecting the Void's weak points and transmitting them to the S.H.I.E.L.D. team. The echo energy was surprisingly effective against these dark beings, weakening them not only physically but also by disrupting their energy.

After hours of underground fighting, Talpa had taken heavy damage but managed to continue on his way. However, the real danger was not over yet. The deeper they descended, the more the Void's influence grew, whispers of fear and despair trying to seep into the crew's minds. Kael had to constantly create a shield against these psychic attacks.

Finally, the combined signals of the Chitauri core and the Star Compass (which Kael still carried with him) led them to their destination. Talpa reached a vast, hollow sphere deep within the Earth's mantle, where heat and pressure were unimaginable. At the center of the sphere was a sight they had never seen before: a vast, pure crystalline structure that glowed in millions of colors. It was the heart of the Earth. It was the Terra Crystal.

The crystal radiated a tremendous amount of life energy, illuminating even the molten rock around it. When the Chitauri core came into contact with this energy, a powerful wave of energy passed through Kael's body. The core was fully awakened, maximizing Kael's potential as an Echo Carrier.

But this mesmerizing sight was overshadowed by an eerie silence. And Kael sensed danger beyond that silence. Surrounding the Terra Crystal, the most powerful servants of the Lords of the Void, perhaps a Void Lord himself, waited for them. They too had reached the crystal and were preparing to use it for their own dark ends.

As Talpa made a final push into the central cavern where the crystal was located, S.H.I.E.L.D. sensors began to alarm. "Commander! There is a massive energy shield around the crystal, and multiple Void signatures! And... my God... the crystal itself... is showing some kind of... some kind of corruption!"

Kael realized with horror. The Void Lords were not just trying to seize the crystal. They were... contaminating it. Poisoning the heart of the Earth with their own darkness. If this contamination were complete, the planet would be doomed.
