Chapter 10: Dune Revenant Awakens

The desert sun bore down mercilessly as Kael's expedition party advanced toward the rumored ruins of the Buried Temple. A wall of shifting dunes stretched endlessly before them, concealing danger with every grain of sand.

At the head of the group, Kael rode on a skeletal warbeast, its hooves sinking lightly into the sand as though the weight of the undead mount carried no burden. Nira sat behind him, eyes wide with curiosity and anticipation. A soft humming sound radiated from her chest — the resonance of her [Fusion Core], still warm from the recent fusion of her Wraith Zephyr.

Behind them marched their squad:

Lina, cloaked in flame-resistant crimson robes.

Syra, her black armor polished and shadow-blurred.

Yavira, with two beast familiars pacing alongside.

Velle, gently plucking a glowing crystal harp that kept morale high.

And interspersed among them were dozens of Kael's elite undead — enhanced through his Lord Skills and Nira's fusion magic.

They had already traversed two hours into the Blistering Expanse when Nira suddenly pointed at the ground.

"There. Bones… under the sand."

Kael halted the march. His eyes narrowed.

"Lina. Burn sweep."

With a flick of her wrist, a controlled wave of flame hissed across the sand, scorching the top layer.

That's when it happened.

The ground exploded.

Dozens of skeletal hands erupted from the sand, dragging themselves free — bone warriors, remnants of some forgotten army, clad in ancient sun-scorched armor.

A sharp System ping hit Kael's mind.

System Alert: Mini-Boss Encounter – Guardian Patrol [Elite Undead] DetectedThreat Level: Moderate (Scaled to Party Level)Special Note: Defeating them may reveal Sub-Entrance to Buried Temple. Objectives Updated: Eliminate All Patrol Units (0/12)

Kael raised his arm. "Formation Four! Protect Nira!"

As the first of the skeletal soldiers lunged forward, Syra blurred into action, twin blades carving clean lines through armor and bone. Lina launched fire bursts at the denser groups while Kael summoned Nether Chains to bind and crush the stragglers.

Nira stood completely still, staring at the ground where residual sand element hovered. Her eyes began to glow — this time not blue, but pale gold.

Kael turned, instantly sensing it.

"Nira…?"

Her voice echoed in dual tones.

"Let me try something new."

Sand gathered around Nira in a cyclone as one of the fallen undead — a large horned warrior — was lifted by invisible strings of mana. Wind and bone cracked as it floated above her hands.

Kael watched closely, sensing the layers of elemental energy twisting and compressing.

And then, the System sang again.

The newly born Dune Revenant roared, then dove underground, burrowing with incredible speed. Moments later, a massive tremor erupted beneath the attacking undead.

BOOM!

Half a dozen of the skeletal warriors were thrown into the air as spikes of bone-sand erupted beneath them.

Lina whistled. "Okay, that's terrifying."

Kael couldn't stop the grin spreading across his face. "She did it… a Tier 2 already…"

With the patrol eliminated, the last guardian fell and let out a dry wail before collapsing into dust. The ground beneath the corpses began to shift. A hidden mechanism activated with a rumble, and the sand collapsed inward, revealing a stone staircase.

At its base, a monumental stone gate stood etched with sigils of death, sun, and balance. Two black crystals pulsed on either side.

Kael approached cautiously.

As they stared into the dark depths below, Kael turned to the others.

"Once we go in, we commit. Any hesitation could get us killed."

Syra nodded. "About time we faced something worth bleeding for."

Nira tugged on Kael's cloak. "Can I name the new one?"

Kael blinked. "The Dune Revenant?"

She nodded.

"I want to call him… Serri."

The creature surfaced momentarily, bowed, and then vanished into the earth once more.

Kael smiled. "Then Serri it is."

As they prepared to descend, Kael's mind buzzed with a fresh wave of notifications. The constant progression and integration of Nira's power were being recognized by the Global Lord System.

Kael felt the bond solidify between them like threads weaving into armor. It wasn't just that he had found a little sister in this strange world — it was that she was becoming part of his very foundation.

And more importantly… he was becoming hers.

As the group made camp at the temple's entrance, Syra pulled Kael aside.

"You've changed."

Kael arched an eyebrow. "That's a vague accusation."

"You're not the cold-eyed loner you were the day I tried to assassinate you."

Kael chuckled. "That man's buried. I have a kingdom to build. And people to protect now."

She stepped closer, her violet eyes glimmering with something deeper than mischief.

"And what if… someone wanted to protect you?"

Kael hesitated.

"I've never had time for… that kind of thing."

She brushed a hand across his gauntlet, fingers lingering.

"Maybe it's time you did."

Kael said nothing, but he didn't pull away. The moment passed quietly, charged but unspoken — like a promise yet to be made.

As night blanketed the desert, and the glowing temple door pulsed with ancient magic, Kael stared into the dark with one thought burning in his mind.

This is just the beginning.
