The first thing Evie noticed when she woke up was the emptiness beside her.
The sheets were cold to the touch as she reached out.
The second thing was the heavy silence.
Where was Tommy?
She pushed herself upright, pulse already ticking up, and searched the room for signs of him. But there was nothing. The only things she could see were his watch on the nightstand and a half-drunk glass of water.
When the bedroom door cracked open, her head snapped toward the sound. Tommy entered slowly, with his hands tucked into his pocket. His expression tightened slightly when he saw her awake.
"Hey," he said softly. "You're up."
"Yeah, just now." She yawned briefly in between the words."Where'd you go?"
"I had a few calls to make." He leaned against the doorframe, but the casual posture didn't mask the tension running through him like naked wire beneath skin.
"Is everything okay?" she asked, scanning his face.
