Chapter 16: The Price of Power

"So, how'd you get in here?" Zou Yidao asked Bai Er curiously.

Bai Er shrugged. "Failed mission."

"And you?" Zou Yidao jerked his chin toward Jason.

Jason rubbed his nose, voice low. "Got into a fight and fell into the sea. I was trying to get contact info from this guy in Binhai Bay… but he wasn't home. Ran into his kid, Qiao Ruidu, who'd just taken painkillers after a match. Got messed up, started a fight, and ended up in this damn game." He paused, jaw tightening. "Wish I could undo that night."

Zou Yidao scoffed. "Your turn."

"Escort duty gone wrong. My squad was ambushed while transporting drug smugglers. Truck went off a cliff in the rain. Visibility was… hell, three meters max." Zou Yidao exhaled, smoke curling around his words. "Worst storm I've ever seen."

Jason cut in, "Two thousand six hundred players in this game. No one knows why we're trapped here?"

"Speculations, but no proof. One thing's certain: the game sharpens you."

"How?" Bai Er asked.

"After Soul Purification, your body changes. You're still you, but… reborn. Hard to explain. Every stat skyrockets."

"Could be illusions. Maybe everything here is code. We're just NPCs with consciousness," Jason argued.

"Proof?" Zou Yidao leaned forward.

Jason described the system BUG he'd discovered. Zou Yidao's eyes lit up. "Damn. You're right—this isn't just about consciousness. We're fully in the game."

Key Evidence:

A player's brain scans showed activity matching real-world stimuli.Experiments proved virtual vs. real pain responses differed.

Bai Er raised an eyebrow. "Alive dissection?"

"By a madman. Leader of the Mask guild. They control three cities. Sharps, Mask, Zen Mind—the top three guilds." Zou Yidao spat. "Might as well call them warlords."

Jason smirked. "People love cliques, huh? Like Han Bin's gang in the Newbie Village."

"You think this game's any different? Survival's impossible alone. Take the Chameleons—rare spawns with a 1/1000 chance to drop a Regen Stone. Cost 6,000 credits, but guilds like Mask control spawn zones. Freelancers get squeezed."

Jason frowned. "So the whole game's a hierarchy?"

"Exactly. Want to leave the Newbie Village? You'll need more than guts. Start saving for Soul Purification." Zou Yidao paused. "Top jobs—Aberration, Hyperbody—cost 3,000 credits. Han Bin chose Aberration. Became a damn titan."

Jason's fists clenched. "I'll climb higher than any guild leader. No one blocks my path."

Zou Yidao laughed. "Ambition's good. But words mean nothing without power."

Awakening

Later, Jason checked the leaderboard:

Sherry: Level 6

Jason: Level 6

Bai Er: Level 6

The village lay in ashes, but the game's true horrors remained.

Sherry's Revelation:Her face, once scarred, now glowed with restored beauty. "Gone. I can protect myself now."

Jason stared. "When did you…?"

"After Han Bin died. I'm done hiding." She smirked, touching her flawless cheek.

Bai Er's Warning:"I've already purified my soul. Chose Hyperbody. Speed's everything."

Jason nodded. "Smart. Aberration's flashy, but Hyperbody lets you outlast everyone."

Sherry's Resolve:"I'm taking a city. Help me?"

Jason slammed his fist on the table. "Count me in. But if we die, we die together."
