Shadows in the Signal
The soft chime of an encrypted alert broke the silence in Damien's control room. He turned sharply, eyes narrowing as the screen flickered — a symbol appeared, flashing red:
> ORIGIN: UNKNOWN NODE
MESSAGE: FOUND SOMETHING. EAST SECTOR. CODE: ASHBRINGER.
SIGNATURE: D.G.01
His breath caught.
The code was decades old — one only two people had ever known. His younger brother, Adrian.
Adrian had been presumed dead in a covert mission gone wrong. A mission that Damien himself had ordered. The guilt had never faded.
And now someone was using his brother's signature.
He tapped into the secondary feed, rerouting signal paths and deploying silent drones toward East Sector. If it was real, he needed confirmation. If it was a trap…
He'd end it before it could begin.

In her room, Nora was mid-stretch, balancing her qi in silent discipline when her bracelet pulsed.
> SENDER: LARK
MESSAGE: LEAVE THE TARGET. HE KNOWS. YOU'RE IN DANGER.
ADDITIONAL: HE'S NOT JUST A MAN.
She stared at the screen.
Lark was her old mentor — the one who had trained her in silent kills and deeper truths. If he was reaching out after years of silence, something was very wrong.
She typed back instantly:
> RESPONSE: UNABLE TO LEAVE. MISSION DEEPENED. SUBJECT LINKED TO PROJECT AETHER.
There was no reply. The line went dead.
Nora exhaled slowly, her hand instinctively reaching under the bed for the twin blades she always kept hidden — forged with spiritual iron, sharp enough to slice through both shadow and steel.
She was here for answers. For the truth.
And the more she watched Damien, the more questions piled up.

Elsewhere in the city, a man in a long coat entered a dark chamber lit only by a holographic display. His face was scarred, his eyes cold.
"Activate Phase Two," he ordered.
The screen responded with a deep hum.
> PROJECT AETHER: PHASE TWO INITIATED.
TARGETS: NORA WARD, DAMIEN GRAYSON.
Back at the estate, Damien's drone footage came online — and what he saw chilled him.
A facility. Burnt. Abandoned. But something was written on the wall in blood:
> "THE DEAD RETURN TO RECLAIM THE LIVING."
Under it, a fingerprint scan. Identified.
Adrian Grayson.
"No..." Damien whispered. "That's not possible."
He backed away, heart pounding.
Behind him, Nora entered, her eyes calm but sharp. "You're not the only one looking for ghosts tonight."
Damien's jaw clenched. "How much do you know?"
Nora held his gaze. "Enough to know that something's coming. And we're in the center of it."
They stared at each other for a long, breathless moment — two predators, both guarding secrets. Both seeing the storm before the first drop of rain.
Neither willing to step back.
