Chapter 49: He Xiaowen Is Shocked!
After successfully capturing Feebas, Chen Xiaoxiao didn't forget her promise.
True to her word, she generously exchanged several packs of high-grade Water-type and Flying-type energy cubes through the system and presented them to the Gyarados leader.
As mentioned earlier if someone helps her, they'll be rewarded in full.
Chen Xiaoxiao was never the kind of trainer to take loyalty or assistance for granted.
She was a young lady who kept her promises, no matter what.
After giving proper thanks, Chen Xiaoxiao prepared to leave.
"Goodbye, Gyarados! I'll definitely come visit again when I get the chance—don't miss me too much!"
Chen Xiaoxiao said cheerfully while sitting side-saddle atop Lapras, waving her arm energetically.
Upon hearing her words, the entire Gyarados horde shuddered in unison.
What?!
This star of disaster plans to come back?!
A sudden chill went down their spines as if they'd been hit with Discharge from a wild Electivire.
Could they say, "Please never come back again"?
Of course not!
They didn't dare.
With Chen Xiaoxiao casually spinning Solgaleo's Poké Ball like a stress ball in her hand, how could they risk upsetting her?
So, with rigid expressions and stiff tails, the Gyarados forced themselves to appear reluctant and nostalgic.
"(Goodbye!)" chorused more than a dozen Gyarados in unison, their tones almost too synchronized to be sincere.
It was a bizarrely touching sunset scene a girl on Lapras bidding farewell to a fleet of fearsome sea serpents who appeared heartbroken by her departure.
No outsider could possibly guess their true feelings beneath the dramatic painting-like imagery.
…
Riding Lapras slowly across the glittering waves, Chen Xiaoxiao watched the sunset, the orange light streaking across the surface like firelight on the sea, as she leisurely made her way back to Shantou City.
By the time she returned, night had already fallen.
After a full day of traveling and an unexpectedly eventful fishing trip, Chen Xiaoxiao was finally beginning to feel the weariness set in.
She returned to her hotel room and entered the Pokémon storage space.
There, she was greeted by the rich aroma of a freshly cooked meal Gardevoir had prepared dinner, using the in-universe Pokéblock-compatible ingredients mixed with modern gourmet techniques.
After enjoying the delicious meal and taking a long bath in the misty hot spring of her space habitat, Chen Xiaoxiao turned in early for the night.
…
The next morning.
After her usual training routine, including coordination drills with Kirlia and Gardevoir, Chen Xiaoxiao changed into fresh clothes and made her way directly to the Shantou City Pokémon Center.
"Xiaowen, are you still in bed? Wow! You're still sleeping? You're going to miss everything!"
Once she arrived, she pulled up her Pokédex's video call function and contacted her old roommate and best friend of four years He Xiaowen, who specialized in Water-type Pokémon.
The screen lit up to reveal a bleary-eyed He Xiaowen, tangled up in messy hair and equally messy pajamas. She stared groggily into the lens, her mind clearly still half-asleep.
Through her half-buttoned sleepwear, the fabric slightly askew, a sliver of skin peeked out causing Chen Xiaoxiao to tease without hesitation.
"Ha! It's all hanging out! Not like I haven't seen it before anyway~"
"Ugh… what time is it?" He Xiaowen groaned, her voice thick with sleep. "Did something happen? Why're you up so early? Are you teasing me on purpose again?"
After all, they'd been roommates throughout their entire high school years, and things like sharing a bath or casually changing clothes in front of each other were nothing unusual anymore.
Chen Xiaoxiao grinned mischievously.
"It's nothing new! But I do have something for you. Listen up! Yesterday, while I was out at sea, I caught an amazing Water-type Pokémon but I already have Lapras, and I don't really need it."
She paused, pretending to act nonchalant before dropping the bomb.
"So I figured I'd transfer it to you. I know you'll love it."
At that moment, He Xiaowen sat up straight in bed like she'd been hit by a Thunder Wave.
"A Water-type?! One you caught yourself?! Are you serious?!"
She leaned into the screen, her eyes suddenly gleaming with curiosity and excitement.
As a Water-type specialist, He Xiaowen was always looking for new teammates to build her team around. She couldn't hide her anticipation.
"What is it?! What kind of Pokémon?!"
Her voice rose with excitement, her half-awake demeanor now completely gone.
"Of course! Just give me the serial number of your transmission machine and you'll see it for yourself once I send it over."
Chen Xiaoxiao spoke with a deliberately mysterious tone, lips curling into a sly grin.
"Xiaoxiao! Come on, seriously can't you just tell me what it is first?"
He Xiaowen huffed, clearly annoyed by the suspense. But given their long-standing friendship, she didn't bother to hold back. With four years of being each other's closest companion during school, their bond was closer than sisters.
After a few more playful exchanges, He Xiaowen got up and walked to the in-house Poké Ball transmission terminal, syncing her Pokédex to it. Once her personal transmitter ID appeared on the screen, she relayed the code to Chen Xiaoxiao.
Chen Xiaoxiao nodded and took out Feebas' Poké Ball, pressing her fingers gently against it. A soft psychic link was established.
"Feebas, remember what I told you? Your time has come. When you meet your new trainer, you'll begin your transformation. Be patient it's about to happen."
Inside the Poké Ball, Feebas trembled with anticipation. The image of Milotic—the graceful, elegant form it one day dreamed of becoming—floated in its mind. It responded with excitement and longing, its inner desire burning like never before.
Chen Xiaoxiao entered the serial number on the transfer machine. A confirmation screen popped up: Recipient: He Xiaowen – Confirmed.
Once she verified the destination, she gently placed Feebas' Poké Ball into the transmission slot and tapped the Transfer button.
A warm red light pulsed briefly across the machine. With a soft hum and a final blink of the screen Feebas' Poké Ball vanished.
"It's there now! Go on open it and take a look!"
Chen Xiaoxiao watched He Xiaowen's reaction through the video call, practically vibrating with excitement herself.
The Poké Ball had just arrived at He Xiaowen's transmitter, sitting in the cradle with a faint shimmer.
Milotic was not just a rare Water-type it was considered one of the most beautiful Pokémon in existence.
Unlike in the games where beauty condition affects Feebas' evolution, the manga universe rarely references that system directly. Instead, in this continuity, the Prism Scale is used for evolution, as in the modern games and canon.
But here's the catch: Prism Scales are exceedingly rare.
They form only when a Milotic dies peacefully in the wild, and the natural elements condense the scale over time. The formation conditions are so delicate that it's said only one or two appear globally every few years.
The single known Prism Scale available in the auction house last year was sold within seconds to a noble heiress from the Hoenn region.
That's how powerful Milotic's allure is: poised, elegant, and viewed as the epitome of refined power especially within high society.
The phrase "Prism Scale equals Milotic" had become something of a mantra among rich young ladies.
Feebas, despite being common in some areas like Hoenn's Route 119, was nothing special by itself. But once you paired it with a Prism Scale, you had an instant Milotic a status symbol and a competitive powerhouse in one.
Chen Xiaoxiao's own Prism Scale had been a treasured heirloom, passed down from her great-grandmother, who had once trained a Milotic of legendary fame.
Although her system shop could exchange items like Prism Scales, its use was strictly restricted:
Items from the system could only be used on her own Pokémon.
If an item was detected on a different trainer's Pokémon during transfer, it would vanish immediately.
Even transferring a system-equipped item like a Metal Coat during childhood when she tried evolving a Scyther to Scizor had failed, and the item was lost forever.
Only Energy Cubes were exempt from that restriction.
She had learned her lesson the hard way. No loopholes. No exceptions.
That's why she had used the family heirloom Prism Scale the one real-world item capable of staying with Feebas through the transfer and triggering evolution properly.
"Thanks, Xiaoxiao! I'm going to open it now!"
He Xiaowen's voice trembled slightly from anticipation as she picked up the Poké Ball from the transfer dock.
"No need to thank me like I said, I already have Lapras. Just go ahead, take a look!"
Chen Xiaoxiao urged her, nearly bursting with eagerness.
"Okay then! Come out!"
With a confident flick of her wrist, He Xiaowen released the Poké Ball. A red beam of light shot out, coalescing into a shape that shimmered and glowed.
From that light emerged a creature shaped like a sea serpent its slender body coated in smooth, pale cream-colored scales.
Its red eyes sparkled, a pair of long, elegant red fins resembling eyebrows flowing behind them like silk in water.
Along the sides of its head, long, hair-like crimson fins waved gently with each movement.
Its most stunning feature, though, was the fan-like tail: covered in an intricate pattern of blue, pink, and black overlapping scales, tipped with four massive, sapphire-hued fan scales, each with a red dot in the center like ancient mosaic tiles.
A calm, regal presence radiated from its form.
Milotic had arrived.
"!!!!!!!!"
He Xiaowen's jaw dropped. Her entire expression froze.
She was completely, utterly stunned.
