Hearing his new roommate's offer for a duel, Yumi didn't even hesitate. Free spirit energy was always welcome.
"Alright then," Yumi said with a smile. "Do you want to have a casual duel with no Duel Disk, or use one?"
"Of course with Duel Disk!" Celina replied enthusiastically. She jumped down from the top bunk, landing with a soft thud in front of Yumi. "Holographic duels are way more fun."
She quickly grabbed her Slifer Red jacket and threw it on in one smooth motion. Then she reached for her Duel Disk, strapping it onto her arm with practiced ease.
The two of them walked outside their room and headed for the empty field near their dorm. There, under the bright sky, they stood face-to-face, surrounded by the quiet rustle of the wind and the soft green grass beneath their feet.
"DUEL!!" x2
[Yumi, LP 4000]
[Celina, LP 4000]
"Ladies first," Celina teased, a playful glint in her eye as she gestured to Yumi.
"How gentlemanly of you," Yumi shot back with a smirk, placing his hand over his deck.
"Draw!"
He drew his first card, his hand already brimming with green cards.
"First, I activate the Spell Card- 'Angel Baton'!" He placed it on his Duel Disk, and the card projected forward in a soft glow.
"This lets me draw two cards, then discard one." He quickly drew two cards, only to frown as he saw more green. He sent one card to his graveyard, keeping his expression neutral.
"Next, I activate 'Sky Striker Mecha - Hornet Drones'! It Special Summons a Sky Striker Ace Token in Defense Position."
A blue hologram of Raye kneeled on Yumi's side of the field, her arms crossed in silent resolve.
[Sky Striker Ace Token, 0 DEF]
"And now," Yumi continued, his hand already reaching for his Extra Deck, "I'll perform a Fusion Summon! The requirement is one non-WATER 'Sky Striker Ace' monster."
A brilliant golden light engulfed the hologram Raye, her form shifting and upgrading in a flash of data.
"Henshin! Sky Striker Ace - Shizuku!"
Raye emerged anew, clad in sleek blue mecha armor with four high-tech shields arrayed behind her. Her left hand bore a short gun blade, and two futuristic cannons rose from her shoulders.
[Sky Striker Ace - Shizuku, 1500 ATK]
"Oh? Fusion with only one monster? I've never seen that before," Celina remarked, her eyes wide with curiosity.
"Next, I activate the Spell- 'Take Over 5'. This sends the top five cards of my deck to the graveyard."
Yumi deftly drew the cards and placed them into his graveyard slot, four of them having green color as they vanished from play.
"I'll set two cards face down and end my turn." He slipped the two cards into his Spell & Trap Zones with calm precision.
"And now, during my End Phase, Shizuku's effect activates. I can add one 'Sky Striker' Spell with a different name than those in my graveyard to my hand."
Yumi pulled a card from his deck, slipping it into his hand with a satisfied smile.
"I'll add 'Sky Striker Mobilize - Engage!' to my hand," he declared, shuffling his deck smoothly before placing it back in its slot.
"Alright then, my turn!" Celina declared, placing her hand on her deck. "Draw!"
She looked down at her newly drawn card, a confident smirk curving her lips.
"I'll start by Normal Summoning Lunalight Crimson Fox!"
A brilliant light formed as a humanoid fox girl appeared, dressed in a revealing crimson one-piece and a sleeveless vest, buttoned only below her chest. A crescent moon-shaped mask obscured her right eye.
[Lunalight Crimson Fox, 1800 -> 1100 ATK]
"What?" Celina blinked in surprise, noticing her monster's sudden drop in attack power.
Yumi offered a brief explanation, his voice calm. "That's Shizuku's continuous effect. While she's face-up on my field, all your monsters lose 100 ATK and DEF for every Spell Card in my graveyard. Right now, I have seven spells, so Crimson Fox loses 700 points."
"Tch! Such a troublesome effect…" Celina grumbled, pulling another card from her hand. "Then I'll activate the Spell Card- 'Fissure'! Destroying one of your monsters with the lowest attack point."
A crack split the ground beneath Shizuku's feet as the green spell card glowed on Celina's side.
"And since you only have one monster, you know exactly who's going into the graveyard."
The fissure widened, and Shizuku fell in, the ground sealing shut above her.
"With her gone, my Crimson Fox regains her full strength!" Celina said triumphantly.
[Lunalight Crimson Fox, 1800 ATK]
"Battle! Crimson Fox, direct attack!" she commanded. The fox girl's eyes narrowed as she leaped forward, claws ready.
"Not so fast, Quick-Play Spell- 'Spell Card "Monster Reborn"'!" Yumi interrupted, flipping up one of his set cards. The image of a magician standing beside a glowing Monster Reborn card flipped open.
"This lets me Special Summon one monster from either graveyard, although it can't attack or activate its effect this turn." His graveyard glowed, light swirling around it.
"Return to me, Shizuku!"
The blue-armored mecha warrior reappeared, standing between Yumi and the attacking fox girl.
[Sky Striker Ace - Shizuku, 1500 ATK]
"With Shizuku back, her continuous effect kicks in once more, lowering your monster's ATK by 800, since I now have eight Spells in my graveyard."
[Lunalight Crimson Fox, 1800 -> 1000 ATK]
Celina's eyes narrowed. Seeing her monster's weakened state, she wisely chose to halt her attack.
"Not bad," she conceded, pulling two cards from her hand and slotting them onto the field.
"I set two cards face down and end my turn."
With her moves exhausted for now, Celina stepped back.
"My turn! Draw!" Yumi declared, drawing a card with confidence.
"By banishing Take Over 5 from my graveyard, I can draw one more card!" He drew again, a small smile playing across his lips as he saw what he'd picked up.
"Next, I'll activate the Spell Card- 'Reinforcement of the Army'! This lets me add one Level 4 or lower Warrior monster from my deck to my hand."
He quickly searched his deck, retrieving a familiar card and holding it up with a flourish.
"I'll add 'Sky Striker Ace - Raye' to my hand." Sliding the card into his hand, he placed his deck back in the slot, eyes meeting Celina's with confidence.
"I'll use Sky Striker Mobilize - Engage!, which lets me add one 'Sky Striker' card from my deck to my hand." Yumi searched his deck again, selecting a card.
"I'll add Sky Striker Mecha - Widow Anchor." He slipped it into his hand and gave his deck a final shuffle. "And since I have three or more spells in my graveyard, I get to draw one more card!"
He drew, his grin widening as he revealed the newly drawn card.
"Now, I activate Sky Striker Mecha - Widow Anchor! I can target one face-up effect monster you control, negate its effect, and if I have three or more spells in my grave, I can take control of it!"
A massive mechanical hook shot out from the spell card, its claws seizing Celina's Crimson Fox and yanking her to Yumi's side.
"Now then… I Normal Summon my ace, Sky Striker Ace - Raye in Attack Position!"
Yumi slapped the card onto his Duel Disk, and a flash of light heralded Raye's arrival. She stood beside Shizuku, calm and resolute, dressed in her black and white uniform, her skirt billowing.
[Sky Striker Ace - Raye, 1500 ATK]
"Now, I Fusion Summon! The requirement is one non-Fire Sky Striker Ace monster."
Golden light surrounded Raye, flames erupting around her as she stared down at Celina. With a swift swing of her katana, she dispelled the light, revealing her new form.
Now clad in samurai-style mecha armor, eight blade-like wings extended behind her, shimmering with energy.
"Henshin! Sky Striker Ace - Kagari!"
[Sky Strike Ace - Kagari, 1500 ATK]
"You really don't know how to hold back on a girl, do you?" Celina said dryly, eyeing the lineup of monsters now facing her.
[Lunalight Crimson Fox, 1800 ATK]
[Sky Striker Ace - Shizuku, 1500 ATK]
[Sky Striker Ace - Kagari, 1500 -> 2600 ATK]
"Kagari gains 100 ATK/DEF for each spell in my grave," Yumi explained. "And when she's summoned, I can add one 'Sky Striker' spell from my graveyard to my hand, like so." He retrieved Widow Anchor from his graveyard.
[Sky Striker Ace - Kagari, 2600 -> 2500 ATK]
"Battle! Crimson Fox- betray your master!" he commanded, and the humanoid fox girl leaped forward, claws slashing at Celina.
"Urgh!" Celina grunted, crossing her arms against the blow.
[Celina, LP 2200]
"Shizuku, direct attack!"
The blue mecha girl charged, her massive shields slamming into Celina.
[Celina, LP 700]
"Kagari, finish this! Direct attack!"
Kagari's blade wings ignited, flames swirling as she lunged forward, blade raised.
But Celina only smiled, calmly pressing a button on her Duel Disk.
"Just what I was waiting for. Trap card open, Nutrient Z! When I'm about to take 2000 or more battle damage, I gain 4000 Life Points first!"
The trap flipped up, bathing her in green light. Celina's eyes narrowed as she pressed another button, flipping her second trap.
"Then I'll chain it with Draining Shield! This negates your monster's attack and I gain LP equal to that monster's ATK."
A shimmering barrier formed, Kagari's attack rebounding off harmlessly. Celina's LP shot up dramatically.
[Celina, LP 7200]
Yumi's eyes widened in surprise. "Impressive," he admitted. He hadn't expected such a well-timed combo.
After all, in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh, where decisions are made by playing cards, and card games grew to the point of losing the duel meant losing your life. But many people don't seem to have enough brain cells to make use of many useful cards and broken combos.
There is even a school open to teach children to cards.
So understanding chain mechanics, setting up combo play was something usually elite duelist know, and for some reason, the people in this world way of thinking when it come to Duel Monster is a bit off.
Like how when he found out he is in the world of Yu-Gi-Oh, he wanted to enter Duel Academia and become a Duelist, but his parent were heavily against it.
Saying that "Becoming a doctor or a lawyer would be easier than being a duelist!"
Yumi was dumbfounded by this, they are saying that becoming a doctor or lawyer would be easier than playing cards.
So because of that argument with his parent, Yumi was kicked out and has to survive by entering a few tournaments to earn cash and survive.
The earlier days were gruesome, and he only survived thanks to his system, letting him print out cards and letting him save money for food and other important stuff.
Basically, he was exhausting his own life force to fuel his card addiction. But hey, even in the real world, people would do something similar; they exhausted themselves to work and build up the future they want to achieve.
Celina smirked confidently, probably thinking that with higher Life Points now, her chance to win just increased.
She clearly doesn't know the unspoken rule of Duel Monsters, as long as you can still draw cards, you still have a chance of winning. Even when one LP drops to 0, there is still a card that can help change the winning condition, letting you continue playing even with 0 LP.
But when you deck out and are unable to draw any more cards, you'll automatically lose the game.
"Thanks, but flattery won't save you," Celina said confidently.
Yumi just smirked back. "I just need to hit you harder, that's all." He set three more cards face-down with a calm flick of his hand. "I end my turn."
At that moment, the effect on Crimson Fox wore off, and she hurriedly scampered back to Celina's side.
Celina smirked. Yumi's monsters might have been stronger, but that didn't mean she was out of options. What did trouble her, though, was the row of four set cards behind the two mecha girls, each one radiating a sense of foreboding.
"My turn! Draw!"
She swiftly drew her next card, barely sparing it a glance before slamming it onto her Duel Disk.
"Spell card, Pot of Greed! I draw two more cards!"
The magic pot shimmered on her field, its mouth opening wide as she drew twice more, confidence surging in her eyes.
"Get ready, Yumi, cause I'm not holding back!" she declared, slotting another card from her hand into her Disk. A green spell card flipped up with a flash.
"Spell card, Polymerization!"
"I fuse my Crimson Fox on the field with my Blue Cat from my hand!"
The two monsters were drawn together, their forms twisting and melding into a brilliant silhouette against the moonlit sky.
"Dance under the dazzling moonlight, Fusion Summon!"
A new figure emerged, clad in a shimmering dancer's outfit with flowing ribbons and a predatory grace.
"Lunalight Cat Dancer!"
