He had no right

A week later, Carmen tried to regain concentration in her activities. She had suggested to Modesto that she would find work, but he kept telling her that he could do anything for her, in exchange for something he was waiting until his graduation to tell her. She was afraid that the latter wanted to propose to her because with the latest events, she didn't know if that was really what she wanted. He had not alluded to this and besides, he had been too busy lately. He would lock himself in his room to talk on the phone for a long time and it wasn't that it bothered her but she told herself that if a girl was ever going to introduce herself as his girlfriend, she deserved to at least prepare accordingly.

“I’m going to go out, Carmen,” Modesto told her while he was, as usual, very well dressed.

“Do you know what time you can come home?”

“Not at all but don’t wait for me.”
