Tangled Truths

The soft hum of the air conditioner filled the living room, but it couldn't drown out the tension that had settled between Mira and Noah. The evening had started calmly—dinner, laughter, a kiss stolen between dishes. But as always, reality found a way to creep back in.

They sat on opposite ends of the couch now, the flickering TV screen a mere distraction from the storm building between them.

"I got a call from your ex-boss today," Noah said, his tone neutral but his eyes searching.

Mira stiffened. "Why would she call you?"

"She said you never told her the truth about what happened with the airport pickup. About why you were really fired."

Mira's jaw tensed. "I didn't owe her an explanation. She didn't care. She just wanted someone to blame."

"And what about me?" he asked quietly. "Did you think I didn't deserve the truth either?"

Mira stood, pacing. "You don't get to turn this around on me. You were part of the reason I got fired, Noah."

"I didn't know," he replied, standing to face her. "But you never gave me a chance to understand. You built walls so high I had to fight just to reach you."

She folded her arms, defensive but visibly hurt. "Because I was scared. Because you... you made me feel things I didn't want to feel."

"Like what?"

"Like I could trust someone again. Like I didn't have to always be in control. Like maybe, just maybe, I was worth more than the next project or promotion."

Silence. Then Noah's voice, low and steady. "You are. You always were."

Mira swallowed the lump in her throat. "I don't know how to do this. I've only ever known how to survive, not... feel."

He stepped closer, closing the space between them. "Then let's learn together."

Her eyes shimmered, but she didn't look away. "What if I mess it up?"

"You will," he said with a soft smile. "So will I. But maybe love isn't about getting it right all the time. Maybe it's about choosing each other—even when we get it wrong."

A tear slipped down her cheek, and she didn't bother wiping it away. She let it fall. Let herself feel.

Mira reached for him, and he pulled her into a quiet embrace. For once, there was no pressure to define what they were. No past dragging them down.

Just two people, tangled in truth, choosing to stay.

And for now, that was enough.
