A DNA Test

Thane felt his heart leap in excitement and shock. He couldn't believe the boy was actually his.

"Are you sure?" he queried, trying to see if Gabriel was just pulling his legs.

Gabriel stared at him in amusement.

"Since when did I begin fooling around, Thane?" he asked.

Thane shrugged.

"I don't know. You might decide to start with me," Thane countered.

"I hope you won't give her troubles with this new finding of yours?" he whispered rhetorically.

Thane stared at him for a while, then averted his gaze.

"I'll best be on my way. I have a case in court to attend to," Gabriel spoke, staring at his watch.

Once Gabriel was out of the office, Thane sat heavily on his seat with a big smile.

Gabriel knocked lightly on the door of Mira's office. He could see through the glass door, Mira staring at him and smiling lightly, signalling him to come inside.

"Good morning," he greeted.

Mira stared at him suspiciously and smiled gently

"Why the sudden politeness?" she asked.

Gabriel nervously adjusted his tie. Mira, seeing him being uncomfortable, laughed.

"Are you about to propose to me?" she teased

Gabriel laughed lightly. "I wish. That would have been more easier,"

"Then what is it?" she probed further.

"I just hope you won't be angry?" he tried to confirm before breaking the news.

Mira's smile faded as she kept a serious expression. She scanned Gabriel with her eyes, her mind suggesting scenarios on things he would do that would deserve forgiveness. Her mind couldn't even fathom or imagine what this middle aged handsome man with blonde hair and blue eyes would do to upset her.

"Spill," she demanded, her expression still.

"I kinda did a DNA test on your son and Thane. He ordered me to do it," he confessed.

"What did you just spit out of your mouth?" she questioned, and stood up from her chair.

"Mira. Hear me out," he said

Mira stands in front of him, her hands in her waist, waiting for him to explain himself.

"Go on. What do you want to explain?" she asked.

"Well...first off, if I didn't do it, he would pay someone else to do it," he said.

"And now I'm supposed to thank you for saving my sorry ass?" she glared at him with angry eyes.

"I never said that. But at this point, he already knows Eli is his child. Remember I asked you the same question and you denied it. Thane asked me to run a DNA test. If the result had proved negative, he would definitely hire someone to get the job done. There's no fooling Thane," Gabriel spoke gently

Mira closed her eyes and thought about it for a second. She knew Gabriel was correct. Thane always gets what he wants and not even Gabriel can stop him. Her mind raised at the possibility of having Eli taken away from her. She couldn't even imagine it. Eli was her life. He was the reason for her hard work.

"Why are you telling me this now?" she asked him, tilting her head in a sarcastic way.

"Well...I know he is going to come and try to confront you. I am here to tell you not to feel scared or intimidated by him," he advised

Mira scoffed.

"What do you take me for? You think I'm some sort of weakling that Thane can walk on? Do you take me for that weak girl that was married to Thane some few years back? Man, that ship has sailed. I can't be intimidated by him or anybody. So you don't have to worry about me being scared of him," she assured.

Gabriel believed she wasn't scared of Thane anymore, but he knew she wouldn't be able to help herself as Thane has the highest power in San Francisco. Mira might not be scared, but Thane is the one with the advantage. Except he decides to play fair and have a little conscience, with a snap of his finger, Eli would be taken from Mira and he didn't want that to happen.

"I'm not saying you're scared of him or anything. I'm just saying this so you won't forget. And he's the one with the connection around the country," he said

Mira nodded before hissing.

"I'm just so pissed you have to obey all his rules and work for him," she whined.

Gabriel smiled and rubbed his palm together.

"Thane is not a bad person," he said.

Mira rolled her eyes.

"That's because you like him and all that," she scoffed

"It's not that. He is really a nice person if you get to know him. I've been working for him since he was a baby. I started working for him even before I became a lawyer. You should know that," he smiled.

"Of course, I know. He's the reason you had the inspiration to become a lawyer," she replied, disinterested.

"I know he might have been an asshole while you two were still married. And believe me, that was his own flaw. He shouldn't have treated you the way he did. But at the same time, he is one of the nicest men you would come to know," he spoke, his voice full of praises for Thane.

"I'm not telling you this so you can care about Thane. I'm just letting you know that any action Thane takes, it's for a good cause and not to bring harm to anyone," he explained.

"How I really wish I could actually give a hoot on all these things you are saying. Really? My ex husband did a secret DNA test on my son, on which you are an alibi, and you stand here telling me how good he is? Gabriel, his sight disgusts me and me thinking he would probably not let me have a little rest is pissing me off the most," Mira said as a matter of fact.

Gabriel swallowed. How was he going to convince Mira and have her make things easy for them both?

At that moment, Mira's phone rang…
