CHAPTER 57.

Chapter 57: The Horns of War

The Iron Empress moved.

From the frost-covered fortresses of Vahlengarde, banners of crimson steel were raised. The Iron Empire, silent during the Luther succession war, now marched eastward—toward the neutral lands between their border and the Luther Dominion.

A storm was coming. But it was not of wind or flame.

It was war.

---

Jean stood atop the eastern watchtower of the Luther Stronghold as horns echoed across the plains. Envoy scouts had returned with grim news: Valeria Durnstahl, the Iron Empress herself, had broken neutrality. Not in full declaration of war—but a "mobilization of border forces" that sent a message far louder than words.

Marion Vos, at her side, muttered bitterly.

> "They think your victory weakened us."

Jean shook her head.

> "No. They think it unified us. And that's what frightens them."

---

Within the War Hall, the council reconvened.

Raegar slammed his gauntlet on the table.

> "Let me ride. If she seeks battle, I'll give her steel."

"No," Jean said firmly. "Not yet. We don't strike until we understand why."

Lord Vance leaned forward, voice low.

> "Rumors from the west say the Magistery is silent. Too silent. I don't trust the timing."

Jean's eyes narrowed.

> "A two-front feint?"

Iriah nodded.

> "Or worse—an alliance."

The words hung in the air like a drawn blade.

Jean clenched her fists. The dragons stirred, Antares moved from the shadows, and now the great powers danced on the edge of open war.

There were too many fires to extinguish.

And yet she could not let any blaze unchecked.

---

That night, Whitney stirred restlessly.

Jean joined him outside, her white hair glowing like frost under the moon.

> "We'll ride at dawn," she said softly, gazing to the eastern hills.

Whitney growled—approval.

> "To speak with Valeria."

> "Or fight her."
