Chapter 23: Game Time, Heart Lines
The Night Before
Aiden couldn't sleep.
He tossed the basketball between his hands in the dark, eyes fixed on the ceiling. Tomorrow wasn't just a game — it was the game. The one with the scout in the stands. The one that might decide his future.
A quiet knock on the door.
"Come in," he said, already knowing who it was.
It was Aria, hoodie on, hair messy, holding two mugs of cocoa. "Thought you might need backup."
He grinned. "You read minds now?"
"Only yours." She handed him a mug and sat next to him on the bed.
For a while, they just sipped and listened to the silence.
Then she said, "You're going to do amazing. Not because you want it — but because you earned it."
He looked at her, and for a second, the weight on his chest lifted.
"You'll be there, right?" he asked.
She smiled softly. "Front row."

Game Day – Gym Packed and Hearts Racing
The gym was buzzing — students packed the stands, the pep band playing loud, signs waving. One big banner read:
GO AIDEN! Show Them What We're Made Of!
Ethan wore a headband and waved pom-poms.
Lana and Aria had face paint and glitter signs.
Noah stood, calm as ever, holding a camera to film everything.
Aiden stepped onto the court.
And saw him — the scout — sitting mid-row, clipboard in hand.
He swallowed his nerves. This was it.
---
The Game – Every Second Counts
First quarter — tight defense, Aiden weaving like fire through the court.
Second quarter — he hit two clean three-pointers, crowd roaring.
Third quarter — he took a rough fall, got up anyway, eyes burning.
Final quarter. Score tied. Ten seconds left.
Timeout. His coach pointed at him. "Final play. You make the call."
He looked to the stands.
His friends were on their feet.
Aria's hands clutched the railing, eyes locked on him.
He nodded to himself.
He dribbled. Swerved.
The buzzer rang — as the ball left his hands in a high arc—
Swish.
Crowd explosion. Victory.
He didn't hear anything.
He only saw his friends jumping, yelling, Ethan nearly falling off the bleachers. And Aria running — straight into his arms.
---
Post Game – Moments That Stay Forever
"You did it!" she said, breathless, hugging him tight.
He held her close, forehead against hers. "I couldn't have without you."
She smiled, flushed. "That felt like a movie."
"It still does."
And then, without thinking—without fear—he kissed her. Right there. In front of everyone.
Noah whooped. Lana gasped. Ethan dramatically fainted onto the bench.

Later That Night – Message from the Scout
Aiden sat alone in the locker room, sweaty, still catching his breath.
His phone buzzed.
Scout Email:
> "We'd love to discuss scholarship options. You've got something special, kid."
He stared at the screen. Then smiled.
Not just because of the email.
But because of everything.
