Robin had a rough understanding of the situation, but she asked curiously, "So, what exactly is the Fuguang Society?"
Zhong Wanhong replied, "That's a long story, too complicated to explain quickly. But more importantly, let's talk about how you managed to have those ordinary people slaughter zombies. How did you do that?"
"Um..." Robin hesitated, unsure how to describe it. "I... I don't really know. I just suddenly felt like I could do it, and then it happened..."
After all, it had been less than two days since Robin arrived in this world, assumed this new identity, and began using this body.
"Don't worry, I'm not interrogating you," Zhong Wanhong said, raising his right hand as if to pat her head again. Remembering her earlier words, he lowered it. "Can you still use that ability now? Does it have any side effects on you or others?"
"And about the question I asked yesterday—have you considered it? Would you be willing to join the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations?"
"..." To be honest, Robin had been through so much lately that she'd completely forgotten about the invitation. She had previously said she would "think about it," but now she replied, "I'm sorry, but I'd rather not join..."
Robin didn't dislike the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations. On the contrary, they had helped her several times in the short time she'd been in this world, and she held the organization in high regard. Joining the Bureau would also mean gaining powerful backing.
The problem was that her primary goal right now was to become a "Songstress." If she joined the Bureau, she'd likely be tied up with work, which would severely hinder her progress toward that goal.
"Don't rush to refuse," Zhong Wanhong said. "Your Ability isn't inherently offensive, and the Bureau isn't short on personnel. We wouldn't need you on the front lines; you'd primarily handle logistical support."
Although Zhong Wanhong's team consisted of only five members, Longcheng had four investigation squads, each responsible for a designated sector.
Zhong Wanhong stroked his chin thoughtfully. "As for your specific duties... let me see. You could continue what you're already doing: releasing more songs and streaming more often. Even without using your Ability, your music has a calming effect on people. In this turbulent society, everyone's nerves are frayed. If more people could hear your songs, it might help resolve some of the underlying unrest at its source."
"Even a 0.1% reduction in the crime rate—the number of heinous incidents you've single-handedly prevented would rival the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations' entire monthly achievements."
"This... is this really okay?" Robin asked hesitantly. The terms seemed too good to be true. She could continue doing exactly what she wanted, with the added bonus of a free salary.
The middle-aged man smiled. "That's more than enough."
"Alright then," Robin conceded. With such generous terms, she had no reason to refuse.
"If there are no further objections, please report to the Bureau tomorrow morning to complete your onboarding process. We'll handle the paperwork and conduct a basic Ability assessment—standard procedure."
"Then... if there's nothing else, may I leave now?" Robin asked eagerly. All she wanted was to rush home and take a shower. Though she had been a safe distance from the battlefield during Yu Lin and Qin Chuming's fight, the entire street reeked of a nauseating stench.
Receiving confirmation, Robin hurried away toward her apartment. The moment she stepped inside, she stripped off her clothes, filled a basin with water to soak them in, and then took a thorough shower.
Forty minutes later, she changed into loose, light-blue pajamas and collapsed onto her bed.
The next morning, all five members of Zhong Wanhong's team were gathered at the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations. Robin was already familiar with Zhong Wanhong, Lü Heng, and Yu Lin. Of the remaining two, one was Bai Yuanju, a bespectacled woman with an inscrutable expression who radiated the stern aura of a school principal.
The other was Artyom, a towering behemoth nearly two meters tall with a broad, muscular build. As his name suggested, he wasn't from the Dragon Nation but from the neighboring Bear Nation. Robin had no idea how he came to work for the Dragon Nation's Bureau of Anomalous Investigations.
Standing before the group, Robin took a deep breath under the scrutiny of their ten watchful eyes and activated her Ability.
An invisible wave rippled outward from her, smoothing away negative emotions and instilling courage.
After a moment, Bai Yuanju adjusted her glasses, her expression unchanging. "This Ability doesn't inherently amplify or enhance physical capabilities. It won't make anyone stronger or faster. Instead, it improves a person's mental and emotional state."
Take exams, for example. It's common for people to underperform or overperform. Even with the same level of skill, two different exams can yield completely different results.
Robin's ability ensures peak performance during exams and allows individuals to unleash 120% of their combat potential in battle. Furthermore, it can neutralize all negative emotional effects, making it remarkably powerful overall.
Bai Yuanju sat at her computer, typing furiously to document her observations, while the others focused on experiencing the effects of Robin's ability. Only Yu Lin pouted, "Ugh, this is so annoying! Why can't I feel anything at all?!"
Yu Lin's innate Resistance made her immune to enemy debuff abilities, but it also prevented her from benefiting from ally buffs.
Suddenly, Robin raised her small hand and said hesitantly, "Um... I think my ability might have an enhanced version."
Zhong Wanhong nodded, encouraging her to continue. After a brief pause, Robin parted her cherry lips and softly began to sing one of the two songs she knew, "Hymn of the Stars," while simultaneously channeling her ability into her own singing voice.
Neither ordinary singing nor the ability's activation alone seemed particularly special. But when combined, they triggered a kind of magical synergy, as if a chemical reaction had occurred.
The instant her ethereal, dreamlike voice filled the air, everyone present—including Yu Lin—seemed to glimpse a breathtaking starlit sky, its myriad stars shimmering brilliantly.
