Chapter 5

Listening to their envious words, tears silently soaked the dry grass beneath me.

The back of my hand was bruised purple from sharp stone fragments, completely cold.

Only after they left did I gasp for air like a beached fish.

I curled up under the animal skin blanket, but I couldn't get warm.

That night, the pack healer came to see me. She told me that because I’d lain in the snow for too long, my womb had suffered from the cold. It would be very difficult for me to have pups of my own in the future.

I was half a healer myself. I’d already expected it.

But tears still couldn't help but stream down from the corners of my eyes.

Along with the tears, surprisingly, came a sense of relief.

Maybe a wolf like me… wasn't supposed to have pups anyway.

Whether they were born or not, they’d just suffer with me.

An innocent life deserved a better future.

The negative rumors about the Shadowpeak pack had spread uncontrollably, forcing them to issue an official statement.
