Darkness swallowed the warehouse whole. Aeris's breath hitched as the cold whisper faded into a haunting silence, broken only by the faint echo of dripping water. Her pulse thundered in her ears, every nerve alive with tension. Kael's grip on her hand was steady but tight, grounding her in the suffocating black.
"Stay close," Kael whispered, his voice a low growl cutting through the void. "They want to break us down one fear at a time."
Aeris nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. Every shadow seemed to pulse with unseen danger; the air thickened, heavy with a promise of betrayal.
Suddenly, a faint glow flickered at the far end of the warehouse — a holographic projection, unstable and glitching. It coalesced into the image of a woman's face, eyes cold and unyielding.
"Hello, Aeris. Kael. Or should I say, welcome to your reckoning."
Aeris recognized the voice instantly. It was Lysandra — once their ally, now their fiercest adversary. The woman's gaze burned through the hologram, accusatory and filled with venom.
"You were fools to trust anyone," Lysandra hissed. "This world is a chessboard, and every pawn you save only becomes a weapon against you."
Kael's jaw clenched. "Lysandra… what do you want?"
The hologram flickered, revealing a series of coded maps and encrypted data. "You're closer to the Rift's core than you realize. I'm giving you one chance: walk away now, or be crushed by the storm you've unleashed."
Before they could respond, the hologram shattered like glass, plunging the room back into darkness.
Suddenly, the faint hum of footsteps echoed—slow, deliberate, and unmistakably close.
Kael raised a hand, signaling Aeris to stay silent. They slipped behind a rusted cargo container, breath held tight.
A shadow detached itself from the darkness — a figure draped in a worn cloak, face hidden beneath a hood.
"Looking for me?" the voice was soft but icy, sending a shiver down Aeris's spine.
Kael stepped forward, eyes narrowing. "Show yourself."
The hood dropped, revealing a young woman with striking emerald eyes and a scar tracing her cheek. Her lips curled into a sly smile.
"I'm not your enemy," she said, voice urgent. "But if you keep following the Rift, you'll be destroyed."
Aeris's eyes darted between Kael and the mysterious woman, heart pounding. Trust was a luxury they could no longer afford.
Suddenly, the warehouse trembled violently — an explosion rocked the far wall, sending shards of concrete and metal flying.
Kael grabbed Aeris, pulling her down as dust rained like ash.
The young woman's voice cut through the chaos: "They're here. The real game starts now."
As the dust settled, Aeris's eyes caught a glint — a familiar pendant hanging from the hooded woman's neck. Her breath caught in her throat."No… it can't be…"
