Chapter 6: Ghosts in the signal

Blood dries. Frequencies never do.

---

The fire crackled low in the corner of the warehouse. Ayaka curled up near the wall, her katana cradled like a childhood toy, while Ren stared at the makeshift map they'd drawn in charcoal and ash. The world outside had gone quiet again—too quiet.

A few hours had passed since the massacre in The Blood Horizon. No sirens. No helicopters. Just the low static buzz of silence and a thousand broken cities holding their breath.

But something kept twitching at the edge of Ren's perception. Not danger. Not instinct.

A hum. Faint. Mechanical. Artificial.

Then—

KRZZZ…krrr–

A voice bled through the old radio on the shelf. One they hadn't turned on. One that wasn't even connected to power.

"–Not all ghosts are dead. Some speak. Some watch. Ren Kurozawa... you remember, don't you?"

Ren didn't move. He didn't breathe.

The radio kept sputtering.

"Broadcasting on frequency 199.6. Survivors of the Ninth Ward, report."

"...What the actual hell," Ayaka whispered, sitting up. "That wasn't a weather channel."

"No," Ren muttered. "It was a trap. Or a test."

Present Day | Echo District – 3rd Blackout Zone

By morning, they moved.

Ren couldn't ignore it. Whoever hijacked that signal knew his name. Not his old world identity. Not his job. Not the person he pretended to be. They knew him. From before.

Ayaka caught the tension in his silence, but didn't ask. Smart girl.

They made it to the outskirts of Echo District by sundown. Rubble lined the streets like broken teeth. All buildings had collapsed inward like they'd been pulled down from above. Zero bodies. No sign of scavengers. Just dried blood and burnt furniture.

And every few steps—another radio.

Off. Disconnected.

Yet whispering static, like they were breathing.

"You think you know pain, Ren?"

Ichiro smiled, holding Aya by the waist. She didn't pull away. Her eyes were distant. Obedient. Hypnotized.

"You never had control. Not of her. Not of this world."

"Wrong," Ren said coldly. "You just borrowed what I built. You've never built a damn thing in your life."

---

Back in the present, Ren ripped a wire out of a rooftop antenna and crushed the radio beneath his boot.

Ayaka flinched. "They're watching?"

"Worse," he replied. "They're remembering."

Lore Drop: Phantom Band

A secretive faction that communicates through hacked signals and psychic echoes. Known to manipulate survivors using subliminal messages and psychic red waves. They existed in the first timeline—but only emerged once cities fell completely. Their emblem: A frequency dial with an eye in the center.

---

"You hear that?" Ayaka's voice shook.

Ren paused. He heard it too.

Not just a signal now.

Footsteps.

Except... they were their own.

Looping.

Repeating.

Echoing the exact pattern they'd just taken seconds ago.

Ren spun. No one was there.

Ayaka gasped. "That's... us."

The hallway mirror cracked. A perfect version of Ren stared back.

Smiling.
