As Kai and Gwen arrived at the village square, they spotted multiple people there, all sitting around as if they were waiting for someone. But these weren't just ordinary people; they were adventurers.
"Looks like we're not the only adventurers here." Kai pointed out.
"Oh great, more adventurers to take the prize." An older man grumbled, clearly annoyed at something.
"Prize?" Gwen asked
"Tsk, the bitch doesn't even know about the prize. What, are you here to sightsee or something? Give me a break."
Gwen almost blew the man's head off, but Kai calmed her down in time.
"Sorry, but we're not here for any prize. We're on our way to Vaudrille, and we stopped by here to stock up and take on a few requests. We didn't know the state of the village until we arrived." Kai attempted to ease the tension, but the man wasn't having it.
"Don't worry about him, he's always like that. Nice to meet you, I'm Wendy." A wolf-kin woman with black hair walked up to them.
"Hello, Wendy. Can you tell us what's going on here?" Kai asked
"Sure can. You probably heard from the locals that a suspicious man came here, told the people that they were heretics, and they got sick a little while later, right? Well, that's bullshit. Someone spotted a cloaked figure in the middle of the night tampering with the water supply, and they believe that whoever did this was the cause of the problem."
"Do you know if anything is being done?"
Wendy shook her head. "The village chief is speaking to a representative of the noble in charge of this land, but they've been in there for three hours now, and no statement has been made."
Just then, the doors swung open and two men stepped out. One was clearly the village chief as his head was low, his face full of distraught. As for the other man, he wore fine, elegant clothing and covered his face with an expensive handkerchief. He was clearly disgusted just being here.
"Ahem! Hear me, people of Dunbridge Village. Your home has been classified as a safety hazard, and I have been ordered by the higher-ups to burn this place to the ground!"
"Welp, looks like we got our answer to what actions they'll take." Kai shook his head.
"Fuck! I came here for no fucking reason! Waste of my fucking time!" The grumpy man got up and left, followed by the other adventurers.
"Nice meeting you kids, see you around, maybe." Wendy left as well, as there was nothing for her to gain from staying here other than getting sick.
"Kai, are we leaving too? I kind of want to help these people."
"Don't worry, Gwen, we'll help them. It's the least we can do."
'There are some hot chicks here and I don't want them to die! One day, I'll come back here and fuck all of them so I cant leave this village the way it is!'
"Noo!"
"Please! There has to be another way!"
"Where will we go?!"
"My family has lived here for over three hundred years! I won't let you burn it down!"
The villagers' reactions were normal. Who would willingly accept their homes being destroyed with no other place to go? No one would.
"Eugh! Get away from me! I don't wish to come down with whatever sickness you peasants have! Shoo! Get back!" The representative shouted in disgust.
"Hello, sir, if I can have a moment of your time, please?" Kai asked politely, walking up to the representative.
He looked Kai up and down, contemplating whether he could even speak to him. He sighed, growled slightly, then spoke up. "Make it quick. I have to bathe in tomato juice when I get back home so I don't get sick."
'That shit is for cleaning out the smell from sunks, not for sicknesses, dumbass.'
"Will you be able to leave the village alone if I'm able to find the source of the problem?" Kai asked
"No." The man responded instantly. "Even if you find the source, that doesn't change the current state of the village. If things get out of hand, then other places will be affected as well. This village passes by trade routes, so people come here to stop and stock up on supplies. Now imagine what would happen if those people got sick while traveling?"
'Fair point.' Kai had to admit.
"Okay, what if I cured everyone first?"
"Pfft, sure, if you can do that, I'll hold off the destruction of this village." The man started walking away, not believing Kai could cure the village. "Kids these days, doing trivial things to earn a bit of coin"
But suddenly, a bright, green light stopped him in his tracks. Turning around, he saw Kai with his hand lifted into the air, and a large amount of mana blanketed the village.
Almost instantly, every person in the village who was or looked sick was now cured and looked as healthy as they had ever been. The village became sparkling clean, and the gloomy, run-down, negative vibe that was once there was now completely gone.
"W-What? What just happened?!"
Kai smirked. "I purified the village. Now, everyone here is healthy and won't get sick again. I also decided to clean up the place and heal anyone who was injured in any type of way."
"I-Impossible! Only great mages can do such a thing!"
Kai gave the man a 'Who the fuck do you think I am?' kind of look and smiled.
"So, can you hold off the burning of the village and allow me to find the source of the problem?"
The man did a perfect 90-degree bow, showing his utmost respect to someone of Kai's caliber. "O-Of course! Take all the time you need! I'll inform my lord about what transpired here and tell him that this place no longer needs to be burned down!"
"Great! Gwen, let's go."
"Coming."
'A great mage? In this rundown place? I need to tell my lord about this right away! He'll reward me greatly if I bring back someone of his caliber!'
