"Is everything alright?" Tristan asked, sliding into the seat beside Adam after Sofia and Elise excused themselves to the restroom.
Adam didn't look up. He simply swirled the drink in his glass like it might hold an answer he hadn't found yet. "What are you talking about?" he said, too casually.
Tristan didn't buy it for a second. "You know what I'm talking about."
Adam exhaled, slow and tight, his jaw flexing once.
"I know things got messy after Sofia found out about... her." Tristan wisely kept Natalia's name out of it. "But you said things were getting better. That you two were getting close again."
Adam's gaze flicked toward the hallway, toward the last place he'd seen Sofia. The sound of her soft laughter still echoed faintly in his mind.
"But tonight," Tristan pressed, lowering his voice, "something's off. Don't lie to me, man. I can see it."
