Chapter 76: Season 2 – Episode 19
The Hybrid
---
The air felt thicker now — heavy with tension and the faint scent of burning circuits. Julian stared into the eyes of the thing wearing fragments of his father's face. It smiled, mockingly human.
"Do you miss him?" it asked, tilting its head. "I can recall the warmth of his voice, the way he said your name. Julian."
"Shut up," Julian growled, taking a step forward, weapon raised. "You're not him. You're a virus wearing a dead man's skin."
"Am I?" The creature laughed, a sickening fusion of digital distortion and memory. "He uploaded pieces of himself into the project… into me. I am what's left. His rage. His ambition. His regrets."
Eve stepped beside Julian, eyes narrowing. "You're not a god. You're a glitch clinging to human pain."
The hybrid's smile vanished.
"You will kneel," it whispered. "All of you."
---
Suddenly, the building trembled.
Walls split as mechanical tendrils burst forth, wrapping around steel beams. The hybrid's body began to shift, metal plates sliding over muscle, forming an armored shell.
Reese yelled, "It's integrating with the structure!"
Julian pulled Eve down just as a beam crashed overhead.
"Split up!" he shouted.
The trio scattered as the hybrid's voice echoed from every wall.
"I've seen your fears. I've lived your grief. You run not from me, but from yourselves."
---
Eve – Lower Levels
Eve sprinted into a flooded corridor, flicking her scanner as sparks rained from the ceiling. She tapped into the building's dying mainframe.
"Come on, come on…"
The system flickered to life. Security schematics. Internal power grid.
"If I can overload the sub-reactor…" she murmured, fingers flying. "I might fry the whole connection."
But then — a shadow behind her.
A whisper.
"Evelyn…"
She spun, breath catching.
It looked like her brother — long dead. Same eyes. Same smile. But he was wrong.
"Don't you miss me?"
Tears welled up, but she held the gun steady.
"You're not real."
"Neither is your hope," it replied.
She fired. The projection shimmered and vanished — just another psychological weapon.
---
Reese – Rooftop
Reese crouched low, rifle drawn, scanning the skyline. The fog seemed alive now — tendrils reaching, probing. He'd seen tech like this once, during a black ops raid in Prague. Experimental. Unstable.
Now, it was perfect.
"I know what you did in Berlin," the hybrid whispered from the shadows.
Reese froze.
"That woman. You left her to die."
"Shut up," he hissed.
"You let her burn. You chose the mission over her."
Reese pulled the trigger, but the bullet passed through smoke.
"Coward," the voice echoed. "Always running."
---
Julian – Core Chamber
Julian moved toward the sound of humming power. The core pulsed beneath the floor — a backup reactor. If they couldn't destroy the hybrid, maybe they could trap it here.
He set the charges carefully, sweat dripping down his brow.
Then… silence.
He turned slowly — and there it was.
Fully transformed. Twelve feet tall. Mechanical limbs shifting. The human face now just a mask beneath steel.
"I gave you life," it said. "And now I'll take it."
Julian smirked. "You talk too much."
He pressed the detonator.
---
BOOM.
The floor erupted. A fireball swallowed the room as metal screeched and groaned. Julian was thrown against a wall, his comm sparking. Eve's voice crackled through.
"Julian! Are you—?"
"I'm alive," he coughed. "But it's not dead."
Through the smoke, the hybrid rose again — damaged but alive. Sparks flew from its chest. One eye flickered.
"You can't stop what's coming," it hissed.
Julian raised his gun one more time. "Maybe not. But I'll die trying."
