Chapter 4

Upon hearing my question, the smug look on her face instantly vanished.

"Ha, haha, yeah."

I knew her and Jack like the back of my hand. If it had been just me there, they might have acted without any restraint.

But as it happened, I was the only one not present.

"Alright, Sophia, come here."

Jack hastily pulled her away from the camera.

Mrs. Harrison, standing to the side, was clearly furious. My bestie abruptly hung up the call.

I switched back to the surveillance feed while wiping off the foundation from my lips.

Just then, the delivery guy notified me that he'd left my Starbucks at the nurses' station.

It was late, and I didn't want to bother the nurses. Plus, my IV drip had just finished, so I got up to fetch the coffee myself.

As I reached the door, I bumped into a tall figure.

It was Jack's buddy, Ethan.

He was looking at me with keen interest.

"What are you doing lurking around here in the middle of the night? You scared the living daylights out of me, you know?"

At that moment, on the surveillance screen, Jack's mother was furiously berating Jack and Sophia.

She issued an ultimatum:

"You two are forbidden from meeting alone. Otherwise, next time, I'll ship Sophia off to Africa!"

"Mom!"

"I mean what I say!"

Turns out, as long as I didn't love Jack, I could easily watch them squirm. This feeling was absolutely exhilarating.

I even felt my condition had improved considerably.

"Why are you still standing here?"

Seeing Ethan hadn't left, I irritably pushed him away and began gulping down my coffee after getting it.

He studied me for a long time. "You're drinking iced coffee with a bad cold?"

"None of your damn business!"

You should know, in my past life, to please Jack, I was gentle and polite to all his friends.

But perhaps because I was too subservient, they all seemed to look down on me.

However, now that I'm being nasty to Ethan, he's not angry. He even laughed.

"I thought you were truly infatuated with Jack. Turns out you're quite the actress."

"Me, infatuated with him? What treasure is he to be worth my infatuation?"

I rolled my eyes.

It's time I should divorce him, I calculated in my mind.

"What the hell are you here for anyway?"

Seeing Ethan still not leaving, I rudely tried to shoo him away.

"My sister's also hospitalized with the flu, right next door."

"Want to go see her?"

I glanced at the coffee in my hand, which I'd ordered extra of to meet the delivery minimum, and nodded inexplicably.

Ethan's sister was lively and cheerful, though noisy but incredibly cute.

The friendly interaction between fellow patients earned me three days of organic meal deliveries.

"Don't mention it. Consider it a return gift for treating her to coffee.""

Since we've come this far, why should I keep playing coy?

I might as well just go for it!

Ever since my bestie Lily found out Sophia was back, she's been a fighter.

When she came to visit me at the hospital, she couldn't help but bring the latest gossip.

"Sophia's being watched like a hawk by Jack's mom. It's obvious she won't let them be alone together. I bet Jack's gonna come begging for your help sooner or later. You better have a game plan ready."

Sure enough, on the day I was discharged, Jack, who'd disappeared for days, showed up out of the blue to pick me up.
