Chapter 47: What's Your Superpower?
Xia Shang said with a smile.
"That's philosophical. My treat, want to grab a drink after work?" Baruch raised the coffee in his hand.
Xia Shang held up his mobile phone screen in front of him and shook it, "Sorry, I'm already booked."
Looking at the beautiful woman's avatar on the mobile phone screen, Baruch said sourly, "Damn it, our friendship was actually defeated by a beautiful woman."
"A beautiful woman invites you and you're not going?"
"Nonsense, I'll definitely bring a rose when the time comes."
The two looked at each other, then burst into laughter.
Meanwhile, because Translucent missed a publicity stunt visiting cancer patients, A-Train had to fill in. Initially, Madelyn Stillwell didn't pay much attention to Translucent being out of contact, as he had a history of alcoholism. The guy might have just fallen asleep in some bar.
But as time passed, Madelyn Stillwell still couldn't reach Translucent.
There was no other way. For Translucent's upcoming commercial shoot, they absolutely had to find him.
So Madelyn Stillwell came to the Vought International Regulatory Department. This department is specifically responsible for monitoring the whereabouts of superheroes. They can determine a superhero's location through the tracker inside them.
"Pull up Translucent's location for me."
"Okay, we were only able to search for Translucent's chip three hours ago. The last location it appeared was in this area of Jersey City, roughly within these ten blocks." The female staff member, Annika, pulled up the map on the computer screen.
Clearly, Madelyn Stillwell was not satisfied with this vague answer.
"Is this your most precise search result?"
"It's possible the signal was interfered with by something..." Annika was still explaining when Madelyn Stillwell interrupted her.
"Have the Security Department search this area. If necessary, search door-to-door, but tell them to be careful how they do it. I don't want any more public relations problems. They've been busy enough lately." After giving her instructions, Madelyn Stillwell left in a hurry.
...
An outdoor coffee shop in New York City Center.
"A latte, with extra milk, please. Thank you," Xia Shang said to the waiter.
"Please bring me an espresso."
Xia Shang looked at Starlight sitting across from him and smiled, "To be honest, I don't really like the pure bitterness of coffee. It's only perfect with some milk and sugar."
"You seem to be in a bad mood."
"You're right. Those superheroes are a bunch of assholes." Even though a few days had passed, Starlight still couldn't suppress the anger in her heart when she thought about the scene that happened that day.
"You were harassed?" Xia Shang lowered his head and tidied up the cutlery in front of him, arranging them neatly together.
Starlight was slightly surprised and couldn't help but ask, "How did you know?"
Xia Shang suddenly looked to the side. He actually sensed The Deep's signal approaching him.
However, he didn't show a surprised expression. Instead, he looked at Starlight without changing his expression.
"When a female just enters the workplace and shows angry emotions about her environment, it's possible she was sexually harassed. The probability is 60%, and this probability increases with the improvement of the female's appearance. So it's not hard to guess."
"Okay, you guessed it right." Starlight leaned back in her chair. "If it weren't for you, the outcome might have been different. It's ridiculous, really. I almost got tricked by a guy like a fish."
"A guy like a fish? You mean The Deep? Well, that description is quite fitting." Xia Shang nodded and took the coffee handed to him by the waiter.
"Thank you."
Starlight now was no longer the rookie who had just arrived. She had her own judgment regarding the distribution of power within The Seven: "Everyone thinks he's a joke, a joke whose superpower can only be used for talking to fish."
"Unfortunately, the masses don't think so. After all, being able to conquer the sea is an ambition humans have had since the dawn of time."
In the distance, a guy wearing dark green resembling a wetsuit walked towards the two.
"Oh, Starlight, are you on a date? If the Media catches you, the huge public opinion will make you instantly roll out of The Seven."
His voice arrived before he did.
"Shit, The Deep, you're stalking me." Starlight subconsciously stood up from her seat. Immediately after, the surrounding lights started flickering. Perhaps in her heart, she felt a trace of fear towards The Deep's words.
She was afraid of losing her current life in the spotlight. If she had to turn back into an ordinary girl from Des Moines, she would definitely go crazy.
"Not a big problem. Even if we're photographed, my identity can be portrayed as a middle school classmate who Starlight once helped when I was bullied at school. And, relying on my own efforts, I successfully got a job at Vought International and met my old classmate who helped me again.
Think about it, what a touching story. Even after becoming a superhero, Starlight didn't forget her classmate. Once this hype is stirred up, I believe her popularity can increase by more than three times." Xia Shang stirred his coffee with a silver spoon while smiling slightly.
"Are you from Public Relations?"
The Deep's voice became a few shades softer. Damn it, these PR assholes. They don't even need to lift a finger to kill. To avoid being targeted later, he didn't want to offend Public Relations.
"No, I'm the deputy manager of the Security Department. My name is Xia Shang. It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Deep."
Xia Shang stood up very friendly and shook hands with The Deep.
"Security Department? Well, I think you're more suited for Public Relations."
"Thank you, I think so too. But who knows what the future holds? Maybe in a few days, I'll be transferred to Public Relations."
The Deep had originally planned to come and make trouble for Xia Shang, but now he found himself unable to back down.
"I was just passing by. You guys continue."
The Deep shrugged, then left alone.
Watching his figure walking away, Starlight returned to her seat. "See? He's a clown."
Xia Shang smiled without speaking, silently drinking the coffee in his cup.
Although The Deep's strength is very weak, his popularity in America is very high. Compared to A-Train, he's easier to control. After all, this guy's weakness is too obvious. Who would have thought this guy's lover is an octopus?
"Was that your superpower just now? I'm very curious what your superpower is?" Xia Shang pointed at the light bulb above his head.
"By absorbing electrical energy, I can convert it into light energy. The more electricity I absorb, the stronger my attack."
Saying this, Starlight began to demonstrate her superpower in front of Xia Shang.
Only to see, as the pupils of her eyes lit up, the surrounding light bulbs quickly flickered, and finally went out with a pop. The moment the light bulbs went out, two beams of light shot out from her eyes.
Xia Shang is professionally trained. No matter how funny it is, he won't laugh, unless he can't help it.
