Charles and Rose were in the living room when Mariam entered. As soon as Rose saw Mariam, she got up to greet her and give her a hug, after exchanging a few words of greeting with her. Mariam took a seat on the couch and began to talk with Charles. Meanwhile, Rose went to the kitchen to get some refreshments. She came back with a tray containing fruit juice and cold water, as well as three glasses. She served Mariam first, then her husband. 


After taking the glass from Rose’s hands, Charles stood up and went upstairs, leaving the two ladies alone in the living room. Upon entering the bedroom, he began to wonder if what he had just done was a good thing. He wondered if Rose would be able to control herself in his absence at home. He was talking to himself, giving the impression of being crazy. However, he knew these thoughts were simply the effects of a mad love he couldn’t control and which disturbed him because of the problems.
