Miranda's POV
My hands wouldn't stop shaking as I watched the nurse take Colton away from my room. He looked so weak, so broken. His face was pale like death itself, and I could see the pain in his eyes even though he tried to hide it from me. My heart felt like someone was squeezing it with iron fists.
This was all my fault. I knew it deep in my bones. If I hadn't gone to that forbidden place, if I hadn't followed the strange pull of this cursed pendant around my neck, none of this would have happened. Colton wouldn't be hurt. He wouldn't be suffering because of me.
I pressed my back against the wall and slid down until I was sitting on the floor. The cold stone felt good against my burning skin. I buried my face in my hands and tried not to cry. I had to be strong. I had to figure out what was happening to us.
But then I heard footsteps running down the hallway, getting closer and closer to my room.
