Chapter 97

Chapter 97 – The Hunter's Gambit

City A's stormy night gave way to a pale dawn, but the tension in Bai Xueqing's penthouse refused to lift. The files Lin Nuo uncovered lay spread across the dining table—documents that detailed every step of the Bai family's calculated ruin. Mo Chen stood at the window, eyes narrowed at the skyline as if he could spot The Fox lurking among the towers.

"This isn't just revenge," Xueqing said, voice low. "This is a hunt."

Mo Chen turned, his face set like stone. "Then let's give The Fox what he wants: a mouse. One too sharp for him to catch."

She looked at him sharply. "You mean bait?"

He nodded. "We leak a rumor that you discovered a piece of your past—something that could expose the man funding The Fox. He'll come for you directly."

---

In the tech lab, Lin Nuo and Meng Zhihao worked furiously to craft a digital breadcrumb trail, each clue leading The Fox closer to an abandoned office building Xueqing had purchased years ago. As they worked, Meng's dry humor lightened the mood:

"So we're faking your tragic past? If this doesn't work, I'll start selling insurance."

Lin Nuo rolled his eyes. "Just keep your firewall solid. I'd rather not die because your jokes distracted me."

---

Night fell again, and Xueqing slipped into the empty building. She wore a wire, and Mo Chen's voice crackled in her ear. "I see movement on the west staircase. He's coming."

Her heart pounded, but she stayed still, posture confident as the shadows shifted. A figure emerged: tall, wrapped in a black coat, gloved hands hidden in his pockets. His voice rasped like gravel. "Bai Xueqing. You should've stayed buried with your secrets."

She kept her chin high. "But then I wouldn't get to meet you, would I?"

---

A second figure moved behind her—Mo Chen stepped out of hiding, gun leveled, eyes icy. "Drop your weapon," he ordered.

The gloved man only laughed. "So the knight has come for his lady. Pity. You've both already lost."

Explosions rocked the lower floors. Mo Chen grabbed Xueqing's hand, pulling her behind cover. "Lin Nuo, Meng—status!" he shouted into the comm.

"Blow's bigger than planned!" Meng's panicked voice came through. "We're cut off from your side!"

Xueqing turned to Mo Chen, face calm despite the chaos. "Then we'll find another way out. Together."

And as flames licked up the walls around them, they slipped deeper into the labyrinth of the old building—determined to survive and finally unmask their relentless hunter.
