The wind outside the stash house picked up, dry and biting. Dust scraped across the hills like warning whispers. Something had changed in the air.
Muzi stood at the edge of the compound, breathing slow and deep. He had felt something since returning from the ancestral plane. A pressure. A presence.

Sphilile emerged from the house, her face pale. "Banele's not back yet. He was supposed to scout the western ridge. It's been too long."
Muzi turned his gaze toward the ridge. A chill crept up his spine.

"Something's coming," he muttered.
---
They found Banele fifteen minutes later.
He was upright — standing — but frozen. Eyes wide. Breathing shallow.
Blood dripped from one nostril.
Muzi reached him first. "Banele!"
No response.
Sphilile grabbed his shoulders. "Banele! It's us!"
Slowly, Banele's lips moved. One word.
"…Mazwi…"

Jobe and Manana materialized behind them like ghosts. Even they were tense.
"He's close," Jobe said grimly. "The man who walks without a shadow."
"Then we fight," Muzi said, stepping forward.
"No," Manana replied. "You survive."
A sound cut through the wind — a single footstep.
Not echoing. Not crunching gravel.
Just… there.
Muzi turned.
A figure stood down the hill, draped in a black coat that moved as if underwater. His face was calm, almost bored. Eyes unreadable.
No shadow beneath him.
Mazwi.

"Muzi," Sphilile whispered. "He's watching you."
"I know," Muzi replied, teeth clenched.
Mazwi raised a single finger. Pointed directly at Muzi.
And smiled.
The world held its breath.
Then he turned — and vanished into the wind.
---
Back at the stash house, Banele finally spoke. "He didn't need to kill me. He wanted to look inside my head… and he did."
Sbonelo cursed under his breath.
Shlelelwe grabbed the map. "We move tonight. He knows we're here. We either disappear, or we die."
Muzi stared at the empty hill.
He hadn't fought Mazwi.
But the message was clear.
You're not ready yet.
