An Alpha's Comfort, A Mother's Warning

I stood frozen on the sidewalk, Rhys's car idling behind me. My words—"Find someone else to torment"—hung in the air between us, but I couldn't will my feet to move forward. Something in his confession had knocked me off-balance.

The car door opened and closed. Footsteps approached. I didn't need to turn to know it was him.

"Elara." His voice was softer than I'd ever heard it. "Don't walk away."

I spun around, anger bubbling up inside me. "Are you kidding me right now? After everything you've done, you expect me to stay and listen to more of your lies?"

"I'm not lying," Rhys said, taking a step closer. The streetlight cast half his face in shadow, but I could see the intensity in his eyes. "I broke up with Zara for you."

"Oh, so I should be grateful?" I scoffed. "What, did you expect me to fall at your feet? Become another one of your conquests? Another notch in your bedpost before you get bored and move on?"

His jaw tightened. "That's not what this is."
