Secrets Whispered in the Dark

I stood frozen in place, Julian's hasty departure leaving me alone with Rhys in the dark alley. The tension between us felt like a physical thing, pressing against my skin.

"I said, get in the car," Rhys repeated, flicking his cigarette to the ground and crushing it beneath his boot.

"Which car?" I asked, my voice coming out smaller than intended. I hated how easily he could intimidate me, even after everything.

He jerked his chin toward a sleek black BMW parked at the curb. Of course he drove something expensive and aggressive-looking. It suited him perfectly.

I hesitated for just a moment before walking toward the passenger side. What choice did I have? It was either accept his ride or call a cab to pick me up outside a sketchy warehouse in the middle of the night. Neither option seemed particularly appealing.
