A Calculated Gift and a Beckoning Danger

I stood outside the coffee shop with my heart still racing from the confrontation at campus. Rowan shifted nervously beside me, his eyes darting around as if expecting Rhys to materialize from the shadows.

"Thanks for explaining everything to me," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "And for the company. I appreciate it."

"Don't mention it, Elara." Rowan's smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "Are you sure you'll be okay? Knight seemed pretty furious."

I nodded, though I wasn't convinced myself. "I'll handle it."

"Text me if you need anything, okay?" He squeezed my shoulder briefly before walking away.

The short walk home felt like miles. What would I say to Rhys? How could I make him understand that there was nothing between Rowan and me? The thought of Rhys believing Zara's manipulations made my stomach twist with anxiety.
